Harvesting Hope:  The Story of Cesar Chavez
by
Kathleen Krull
Grades 3-6

Harvesting Hope is a great book by Kathleen Krull.  It is a biography.  The main character is Cesar Chavez.  The setting is California.  I like the illustrations because they were very bright and very well illustrated.  The book is about Cesar Chavez, a migrant worker.  He went on a 1,000 mile march.  I liked the book because it was very good and
interesting.  My recommendation is that I think people should read it because it is a good and very well illustrated book and they will learn about history.

I would recommend the book Harvesting Hope from among the RI Children Book Award Nominees because I enjoyed it.  Kathleen Krull is the author.  Harvesting Hope is a biography about Cesar Chavez.  His land   was destroyed by a drought and he went to work as a migrant laborer on  a farm.  Cesar didn't get the respect he wanted so he went on strike.   The setting of the book was outside in California travelling around and at his boyhood farm.  The pictures in this book were helpful to see what was happening.  I rally liked this book because I like to know what our ancestors have done before us.  I would recommend this book because I think it is important for people to know the past and what happened and not to do the same mistakes that our ancestors did.

The book Harvesting Hope was really interesting to me.  The book was about a man named Cesar Chavez.  He was a farm worker along with his family and others.  They fight (non-violently) for freedom and what is right.  The book has colorful pictures.  They help you see what is happening.  I would recommend this book to anyone who likes action and
believes in freedom.

Kathleen Krull is the author of Harvesting Hope.  Harvesting Hope is based on a true story about a man, Caesar Chavez, who sees poor treatment and tries to stop violence by going on a protest march, or strike. The illustrations in Harvesting Hope were brightly colored and had a lot of detail in the pictures.  I loved when my library teacher read Harvesting Hope out loud.  I would recommend this book to anybody who likes history.

Harvesting Hope by Katherine Krull, is about a farmer named Caesar Chavez.  This book is non-fiction because Caesar Chavez is real and so were the events In this book.  I disliked this book because it was kind of boring, but you may disagree.  I did like the illustrations though, because they were very nice. The problem starts when there is a big drought and Caesar's crops stop growing.  Also, Caesar sees how farm workers conditions are terrible and he is angry.  The climax starts when Caesar starts devoting his life to making the workers lives better.  I recommend this book to grades 4-6 because some of the issues in this book may be too confusing for grades under 4th. I rate this book a 2 out of 10 for the same reason I disliked this book.  My favorite part of this book is when Caesar achieved what he wanted, which was better conditions for farm workers.

Justin, Northern Lincoln Elementary, Grade 6

Harvesting Hope was a great book!  Kathleen Krull is also a great author  Harvesting Hope was a non-fiction biography.  This book was about Caesar Chavez and his life.  It was also about his long protest march.  Caesar Chavez was a Mexican American migrant worker in Central California.  I liked this book because it showed how a person of a different race had to go through life being careful about how to state his opinions.  This book was illustrated, and the illustrations were
important because it shows you some idea about what it looked like during the protest march. I would recommend this book to other children because it shows other people and what they did to fight for what they believed in.  Caesar was the first person who fought about what he believed in without killing or hurting.  I think this person Caesar Chavez should be very important because of what he did!

Harvesting Hope was the best book!  The author Kathleen Krull sure knows how to write!  This biography is about a Mexican American named Caesar Chavez and all of the events in his life.  This book is also about the long walk he had to take and that he later went on a food protest.  The setting of this book was in the rural part of California.  The main
character of this story is Caesar Chavez.  The minor people of this story were people who protested with Caesar Chavez.  The pictures in this story were marvelous, the illustrations are very important to this book because they show the places that he lived and what he looked like.  I really enjoyed this book because it showed what his life was like and all the hard work he did to get a dignified life and how he lived standing up for his rights.  I think that other people should definitely read this book because they will learn about Caesar Chavez and how he fought for what he believed in.

Harvesting Hope is a biography.  It is about a Mexican American person named Caesar Chavez.  He was a migrant worker who picked crops on farmlands for a living.  The farm owners didn't treat the workers fairly.  They barely paid them anything for a long day's work.  After a while, Caesar had enough of this poor treatment.  He decided to fight for equal rights, getting many others to join him.  Caesar was the main character.  The book was set in California in the 1940's.  Harvest Hope
was illustrated with very colorful and unusual pictures.  The pictures helped give a clear image of the situation.  I liked this book because it taught me some history and it kept me hooked.  Other people should read this book because it will open their eyes to how horrible people have treated others.  Chavez had gone through a lot of sacrifice to fight for rights for the migrant workers.

This story is about Caesar Chavez's life.  It's a biography about him and shows how much he fought for Mexican American migrant workers' freedom.  He fought for their rights because they got low pay and didn't get respect by their employers.  It takes place in California when migrant workers were treated unfairly.  The illustrations in this book were painted and were an important part of the story to see the hundreds of migrant workers in the protest.  I liked the book because it's about a
man who fought for rights.  I recommend this book to anyone because they will learn how people were treated unfairly back then.  Here's a clue, he fights for freedom.  But does he get it?  This book was really great to read.

Tim and Dan, Grade 6, Northern Lincoln Elementary School, Lincoln, RI

Harvesting Hope, by Kathleen Krull, is about Caesar Chavez, and how he fought for the freedom of Mexican American migrant workers.  These migrant workers got paid very little money to work a long hot day in the fields.  Caesar got so mad that he encouraged the workers to go on strike.  This almost started a riot.  Chavez and his crew walked for weeks in a protest march.  He told his crew that to speak the truth was better than violence.  The 67 people who walked with Chavez marched right up to the police.  The illustrations are an important part of this  book.  I liked the book because it is about a man who fought for human rights.  People will learn from this book that people back during that time were not treated fairly and how they had to work to earn their rights.

Harvesting Hope is a nonfiction book.  This book is about a man named Caesar Chavez who had to work in the fields picking crops.  The migrant workers were not treated very well by the farmers, so Caesar and the other migrant workers protested.  The setting of this book is California.  The book is illustrated with nice pictures.  I like this book because it has a lot of detail and is a good book.  This is a book that I hope that everyone will like.

Ryan, Grade 6, Northern Lincoln Elementary School, Lincoln, RI

Harvesting Hope is a biography.  Caesar Chavez went on a strike when he was a migrant worker.  He saved the other migrant workers from poor working conditions.  The illustrations in the book are important because they help the reader see the action.  I liked the book because the illustrations are colorful.  I would recommend this book to someone who is older than a little kid.  If I read it to a little kid I would skip the part about when he went on the hunger strike.
