Before a Challenge Occurs:

Maintain a MATERIALS SELECTION POLICY. Any selection policy will include a section on the Reconsideration of Materials which outlines procedures that will be followed when any materials are challenged.

Keep lines of communication open within your school community.

Keep abreast of legislation affecting First Amendment rights both nationally and on the state level.

When a Challenge is Made:

Remain calm, courteous and positive.
Advise the concerned individual or group of your selection procedures as well as the procedures followed for the reconsideration of materials.
Notify the appropriate administrator as soon as possible.
Keep complete written records.
Be prepared to defend the challenged material by sharing reviews, indicating curriculum support, etc.
When appropriate, contact local media. (only after review procedure is completed)
Do not remove disputed materials when a complaint is made.
Emphasize that parents can only request that their child be denied access to materials being reconsidered.
