COMMENTS ON ELLA ENCHANTED, THE GREAT PYRAMID, A PICTURE OF FREEDOM, SEARCH FOR THE SHADOWMAN, CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS, MONSTERS IN CYBERSPACE

Levine, Gail Carson. Ella Enchanted. HarperCollins, 1997. Grades 5-6

Ella's enchantment is always to obey (even her silly stepsisters). She sets out on a dangerous quest to find the fairy who can remove the spell.

Student Comments

This book is excellent because it uses beautiful language. It is interesting because whensomeone tells Ella to do something she must obey because if she does not she will feel a dizzy sensation. This happens because a fairy gave Ella the gift of obedience when she was a child. She befriends Prince Charmont at her mother's funeral. Her father leaves her with her new stepmother who treats her as a servant. This book is for advanced readers and we recommend it.

Paige R. & Morgan D., Grade 6, Scott School, Warwick

This book is better than the regular version of Cinderella.

Lauryn R., Grade 6, Deering Middle School, West Warwick

"Ella Enchanted" is a good book for grades 4-6. It has strong language, a nice beginning, middle and end. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in fairy tales and make-believe.

In my class, we're learning about the Ancient Egyptians. Then, my teacher assigned projects to each of the students. I decided to do my project on the Great Pyramid, along with my friend, Dean. This book became a great reference and a great help. It was also very interesting to learn about one of the largest man made structures in the world.

Tyler M., grade 6, Scott School, Warwick

The Great Pyramid was an educational book about ancient Egypt. Iliked when they talked about making the Great Pyramid. You should read this book because it explains about mummies and how and where they were buried the dead body. I recommend this book to kids who like books about Egypt.

McKissack, Patricia. Dear America: A Picture of Freedom. Scholastic, 1997. Grades 4-6

Can you imagine that you must hide the fact that you can read and write? Clotee, a young slave girl must do just that and also decide if she should risk her life escaping to freedom.

Student Comments

I just read this spectacular book called The Picture Of Freedom by Patrcia C. MacKissack .I loved this book because it takes you back to 1859 when there were slaves. Through the eyes of a slave, you learn about the bad conditions they lived in. So, if you like history, then this is an excellent book for you.

My favorite part of Captain Underpants was when the boys shot the doggy doo doo beetween Doctor Diaper!

Savannah P. John F. Horgan School, West Warwick.

I thought that Captain Underpants was a funny but in some ways stupid. Captain Underpants was about two boys who get in trouble for their jokes and pranks in school. Those boys are sort of like my friends and I but we don't get in trouble in school.

Daniel B. grade 4 Dunn's Corners School, Westerly

I think Captain Underpants is really hilarious. If you don't read it, you're crazy. It's funny because the two boys play pranks on the school. One day George bought a hypnotizing ring. Then they hypnotized their principal into being Captain Underpants. When they snap, he wakes up and forgets everything the boys did. You should read this book!!

Ashley E.and Kelsey R., grade 4, Scott School, Warwick

My name is Kevin A., and I am in the third grade at Horgan School, in West Warwick. I'm commenting on The Adventures of Captain Underpants. I liked the part when George and Harold got caught doing the various pranks at the football game, and when they changed the principal into a monkey. I liked the story a lot.

I think that Captain Underpants is one of my favorite books besides Maniac Magee. I say if you haven`t read it, read it, and if you have you are awesome. It is about two kids who are writing a comic book about captain underpants and the evil wedgie power. I still say read it, because it is short, funny, and tells you not to play tricks on your principal.

Ashley K. Grade 4 Dunn's Corners School, Westerly

Hi. My name is Chelsea P., and I am a fourth-grade student at Horgan Elementary, in West Warwick. I liked, The Adventures of Captain Underpants, because it was very silly. My favorite part was when George and Harold put pepper in the cheerleaders' pompoms.

Hi, my name is Amanda V. I am in the 4th grade at Horgan School, in West Warwick. I liked, The Adventures of Captain Underpants, because it's funny. I liked when Captain Underpants saw Doctor Diaper. I also liked when Mrs. Soltysiak, our Librarian, showed us the flip-o-rama.

Hi, my name is Alyssa B. I am in the fourth grade at Horgan School, in West Warwick. I liked, The Adventures of Captain Underpants, because of all the signs that they messed up. It was a funny story!!!

My name is Areli O., and I am in the third grade at Horgan School, in West Warwick. I liked, The Adventures of Captain Underpants. It was a very funny story, especially when Principal Krupp got hypnotized and turned into a superhero! You've got to read it!!!!

We don't think it should win because it is pointless and has no meaning. People nominated it because it was funny. But we don't think it's good literature. It was a waste of time and it was babyish. It's too childish. It was a waste of time for us to read. We could have been reading a better book. We didn't like it because it was boring and had no action. It was obvious what they were going to do next. We just didn't care for it.

Jonathan F., Mike B. , Coryssa M., Shayna D., Amanda V. Lonsdale Elementary Grade 5

We think the Adventures of Captain Underpants needs more details. Also if you make a sequel please make the main characters Timmy the Talking Toilet and Timmy the Talking Port-a-potty. We thought the first part of the book was funny, but the second part of the was blah.

Savanna T., Alanna G., Christine H., Stephen S. Lonsdale Elementary Grade 5

We think the book should not receive the Children's Book Award because it was strange and doesn't have good descriptions. We think it was sort of funny. It would look better if Dav Pilkey colored in the pictures because it would give you a better description of the book and that's all we have to say about this silly book.

David W., Erica R., Sasha R., Michael S., Maria K., and Bridget S. Lonsdale Elementry Grade 5

We thought that the The Adventures of Captain Underpants was very amusing and funny. The bad thing about it is that it did not describe the setting and charactars. We all thought that the part when George and Harold sling-shot doggy doo under Doctor Diaper was really funny. We all loved this book!

Peter A., Yanni L., Swati S., Ryan D. Lonsdale Elementay School Grade 5

We think that this book should win the Rhode Island Children's Book Award because the book has alot of funny litterature. We also like when they throw fake doggy doo at Dr. Diaper. The pictures are well illustrated. That's what we like about The Adventures of Captain Underpants!

Joey B., Kelly P., Holly D., Paul G. Lonsdale Elementary Grade 5

Our group hated the book, it was very childish and pointless. It doesn't deserve the award, actually it does not deserve to be a nominee. At times it was funny, but it got too carried away. It seems as if it was a second, possibly first grade book.

Chuck D., Kyle R., Diana S., Casey N. Grade 5 - Lonsdale Elementary School

We thought that the book was good and it had a catchy title and it was funny. We all liked how Captain Underpants jumped out of the window and did cool things. It should win because lots of people read it. If no one read it, no one would vote for it.

Derek A., Sarah M., Frank K., Katie M. Grade 5M Lonsdale Elementary

We think The Adventures of Captain Underpants should be chosen for the RHODE ISLAND Children's Book Award because it is very humerous, such as when George shot fake doggy doo-doo under Dr. Diaper. The literary value of the book is somewhat poor because there is little description of the characters and the setting, but we still liked it!

Emily D., Cassis B., Trevor B., Thomas C. Lonsdale Elementary School Grade 5

Well, being in fifth grade and all, it didn't really grab our attention. It was funny at times but it was pointless. We think that the author, Dav Pilkey shouldn't have chosen underpants for something to write about. It was childish and is meant for little kids. The only thing we liked about it was it was sort of funny. Those are our thoughts.

Cassondra G. John B. Cindy P. Andrew M. Lonsdale Elementary grade 5

When we saw the title we thought it was going to be a funny book. Then we read it and we found out that it was funny, but did not make sense. We think that this book should have more discriptive words in it. We think this book does not deserve the book award. On a scale of 1-10 we rated it a 6.

Stephanie K. Mallory R. Kayla C. Joey C. Kenny V. Lonsdale Elementary grade 5

We liked The Adventures of Captain Underpants because it was put together like a comic book and we think it was funny. Ha!Ha!Ha! And we like comic books and cartoons. We like the book because it has a catchy title and we would like it very much to win! Thankyou.

Melissa B., Andrew L., Anthony T. Lonsdale Elementary Grade 5

We throught it was very funny and that if you get a chance to read it, you should!!!!!!

Bruce F., Danny B., Darrell P., Philippe D. Grade 4, Scott School, Warwick

We all liked the part when Dr. Diaper thought he pooped on the floor. We also liked when Captain Underpants flung his extra pair of underwear at Dr. Diaper. We didn't like when the football team changed their name. We thought the story was hilarious when the kids bought the hypnotizer. We think you should read this book because it was very funny and there were many details.

Kayla M., Kerry E., Rebecca S. Grade 4, Scott School, Warwick

We liked Captain Underpants because it was funny and weird. We think Dav Pilkey writes good books. Third graders would enjoy this book.

David R. and Joey H. Frenchtown School Third grade

We liked it when Captain Underpants used Wedgie Power. We liked it because it was adventurous. We also liked when George and Harold wrote the comics. We liked when George and Harold used a slingshot to shoot the doggie doo doo. We liked when they got the power ring that turned Mr. Krupp into Captain Underpants. Last, but not least, weloved the whole story. THE END!

Ryan G., Domenic R., Adam J., Joshua E. Grade 4, Greenwood School, Warwick

We liked the story because it was hilarious. The part that we liked the most was when Dr. Diaper thought he pooped in his diaper.

Morgan D., Amanda M., Kate T., Kathryn H. Grade 4, Greenwood School, Warwick

The story of Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey is very funny. My favorite part is when the hunk comes alive.Everybody is scared of the hunk but Captain Underpants comes to the recue.I hope you like this story.

Lisa Z. Frenchtown School Grade 3

We loved the book. It was very funny. Our favorite characters were George, Harold, and Captain Underpants. Our favorite parts are when George, Harold and Captain Underpants catch Dr.Diaper and when George and Harold fill the football with helium.

William B., Bobby F.,Joshua F., Ronnie M. Grade4, Greenwood School, Warwick

We read the book Captain Underpants. We loved it so much. We think it was the greatest book in the world. We loved the part when the football team sang, "We love Boomer the purple dragon." We love Captain Underpants because he runs in his underpants and his red cape.

Jessica L., Lisa C., Emily S. Grade 4, Greenwood School, Warwick

We thought Captain Underpants was a funny and weird book. We also thought the book could cheer you up. What we didn't like about this book is Captain Underpants in his underwear.

Brandon D., Scott H., James T. Grade 4, Scott School, Warwick

We think Captin Underpants was funny, interesting, and it had a lot of action. The most funny part was when Captin Underpants shot underwear at Doctor Diaper. The most interesting part was when Harold and George hypnotized Mr.Krupp. The part with the most action was when Harold and George had to get Captain Underpants (Mr. Krupp) away from the robots and back to school, but they were all guarded by robots so they had to get passed them.

Samantha K., Meaghan S., Veronica C. Grade 4, Scott School, Warwick

"Captain Underpants" was a very good book. It was kind of weird. I thought the funniest part is when the teacher at the end snaps her fingers and Mr. Krupp (Captain Underpants) turns back into Capt. Underpants. We also thought Capt. Underpants was funny when he stuck Dr. Diaper to the post, because he took a sheet of paper and stuck it to Dr. Diaper that saie "Arrest Me." Remember you are missing out on a very good book.

Peter C. and Kurt G., Sowams School, Barrington

We like Captain Underpants because he wears underpants for pants and he acts funny.

JESSE M. ROBBY G. JASON K. NICK H. Grade 4, Greenwood School, Warwick

We liked the book very very much. We loved Boomer very much. We liked Captain Underpants. We all liked the story.
