The Year of Miss Agnes
by
Kirkpatrick Hill
Grades 3-5

This is a story about a class that has many difficulties finding a teacher to keep.  Thie story
takes place in Koyukuk, Alaska.  Finally the class gets a teacher for the year.  They thought that Miss
Agnes would stay longer but to their dismay she only stayed for that year.  Fred, the narrator of the
story, and Bertha were the first 2 students to meet Miss Agnes.  The 2 girls had tea with Miss Agnes at
the school house.  The girls and the rest of the class loved their new teacher.

I loved this story.  I thought the book was exciting and interesting.  I especially liked the part in the
book when Bokko, Fred's sister, started going to school.  I liked this book a lot, but parts of the
story were dull.  I'd give this book four stars out of five.

Claire, 5th grade
Hanaford School, East Greenwich

I think The Year of Miss Agnes is not good because I like books like White Fang, and books that have action.

Timothy, grade 4
Clayville School

The book is about a teacher from England.  She comes to a town in Alaska to teach the children.
I  liked it because it taught me a lesson.  My favorite part was when they make a time line.

Austin Round,
Gr. 4
Clayville School

The Year of Miss Agnes is a good book. I liked it a lot. The main characters are Bokko, Mama, Bertha, Old Man Anderson and Fred and Miss Agnes.

Nick W.,  Grade 4
Clayville School

I donut like the book because it needs more action.  Everything was too dull.

Ian Panzica, Grade 4
Clayville school

I felt a little bad when Miss. Agnes had to leave.

Kimberly Torres, Grade 4
Clayville School

I did not like THE YEAR OF MISS AGNES because Bokko is Fred's sister and Fred is the narrator. It did not have action and it’s not a mystery and I like action and mystery books. But it is still a good book.

Jaklyn Travis,  Grade 4
Clayville School

I read The Year of Miss Agnes. I liked it because I found out that the narrator Fred was a girl. It was short for Frederika. Her friends name was Bertha. Then they got a new teacher they thought she would be mean but they were wrong. Then one night Bertha was helping her mom in the yard and Fred went to were they live and both of them went to there school house and someone was in there it was Miss Agnes. She decided to stay. You really should read this book its really fun and it takes place in Alaska in 1948. If you like school it is a great book.

When I read The Year of Miss Agnes I loved it so much I didn't want the book to end. I was so exited about all the stories and music in the book. I wish my teacher didn't believe in grades! Still my teacher is really nice. I liked the Christmas Carol play they had in December. I think its the best book for 3rd Graders. Frederika is such a silly name for a girl. Her nickname is Fred I thought she was a boy. My favorite character is Miss Agnes because she's the main character in this story. I think readings important because kids can learn from books. I like Bertha and Bokko in our book too.

I read a book named The Year of Miss Agnes. It was a really good book. So far since I've been in school its probably been one of the best books I've read. Its about a group of kids who try to get a teacher and cant find one, but they find a teacher and she says Ill only stay for one year and when the year was over she went back to England. The kids went to fish camp came back and their she was. This is a very good book. Anyone can read this book.

I liked “THE YEAR OF MISS AGNES,” it is a good book. I think you will like it. One of the good parts is when Bokko went to school. An interesting part is Bertha learned cursive before anyone and Fred (Frederika) said “it seemed like she's been doing it ever since.” Its an interesting book. You should read it.

I like this book The Year of Miss Agnes. It was a good book but the character Mamma was mean first but at the end she got nice. Also Bokko was a great character but my favorite character is Fred. Also Miss Agnes was the best character. I liked her very much. Also I think you should read this book.

I thought The Year of Miss Agnes was a really good book because I enjoyed it. If you want a really good book to read I think you should read this book. It was a really good book for 3rd graders so if you are in 3rd grade it will be a good book for you. The book tells about how the kids went to school in Alaska in the year 1948.

I liked The Year of Miss Agnes. The Year of Miss Agnes was a good book because it talked about school. It is a good book to read in reading class. I enjoyed reading it. It was fun. I think this would be a good book for 3rd graders to read so try to find it at your school bookshelf or at a library.

I read the book The Year Of Miss Agnes. It was a really good book. My favorite part was when Miss Agnes stayed at the school to keep teaching the children. It was kind of sad to think Miss Agnes was going to leave because you would think Bokko would be able to go to school again because she cant hear or talk. I think other people should read this book it was really good.

I liked The Year of Miss Agnes. It was about a girl named Frederika that lived in Alaska. Frederika and her class never liked their teachers. The teachers never liked the smell of fish. That was what the class always ate. Then Miss Agnes came. She hated fish. She couldn't smell it because she had sinus problems. She didn't believe in grades. They liked that. She let them make their own books to read. They were about themselves. Miss Agnes was very nice but she had to go back to England. So the class was sad. Frederika went to winter camp. When she came back she saw lights in the school and there was Miss Agnes. Miss Agnes stayed. Frederika was going to ask Miss Agnes why she didn't go back to her home England. I think you would want to read this book.

The Year of Miss Agnes was a good chapter book. The fun part of this book was that there were little surprises. Like Fred was Frederick's nickname. Do you like school? If you do this is a good book for you!

I read The Year of Miss Agnes. I loved it! I like everything about it! My favorite was when Miss Agnes said [I do not believe in grades!] And put the grade book away. I recommend that kids who love to read and love action should read this book!!

I thought that The Year of Miss Agnes was a good book. I cannot really describe why, but I can say what my favorite parts are. One of them was the chapter about Christmas. Another one is when Miss Agnes got the microscope and said that she thought Jimmy Sam should go to college. My last favorite is when Miss Agnes comes back. I really enjoyed this book.

I like the book The year of Miss Agnes because it is a nice story about a girl named Fred her real name is Frederika and a new teacher is coming to the Allakalet town. It is a story but it is happy in the end. The teacher Miss Agnes has to leave to go home in England. But in the end she stayed.

Hi my name is Rachel and I read a great book named The Year of Miss. Agnes. Its great and funny. Its about Koyunkuk School and how they try to get a new teacher but then they find Miss Agnes. They find out that she lost her smell so the fish smell does not drive her away like all of the other teachers. I recommend that you read it.

By Rachel, St. Catherine Laboure School, St. Louis, MO

I liked the book The Year of Miss Agnes. The characters are very funny. Their new teacher is very nice. They think there teacher is leaving but two characters find her. It tells what people had back then. They did not have televisions and they went to a one-room school. They had to get certain animals in certain seasons. I think this is a good book for third graders.

By: Rob, St. Catherine Laboure School, St. Louis, MO

What I liked about The Year of Miss Agnes is when they say Little Pete gets yelled at by Big Pete has to yell at him looking up. I think it was nice how Bokko got to go to school even know she was deaf. Also how in the beginning how Fred asked Miss Agnes if she likes fish Miss Agnes said no I hate it but I have sinus trouble. Read this book it is very good.

By Robert, St. Catherine Laboure School, St. Louis, MO

I liked The Year of Miss Agnes because it taught me some new vocab words.  It was interesting because I was never alive when it was 1948 so it taught me how it was back then. I think this would be a good book for 3rd graders. My favorite part was when Fred and Bokko looked in
the window and saw Miss Agnes.

By Sam, St. Catherine Laboure School, St. Louis, MO

I read the book The Year of Miss Agnes and I think you would like it. The story is about a teacher that the kids at Koyukuk school like but she said she would only stay for one year. Miss Agnes likes to wear pants only is not the custom in Alaska. Miss Agnes was surprised when Fred did not know how to spell her sisters name Bokko [who is deaf]. Then Miss Agnes says she come to school and teaches Bokko and the class sign language. This which my teacher was like Miss Agnes because she doesn't believe in grades. This story take started around October the 1, 1948.

I read The Year of Miss Agnes it was okay. I didn't like when mamma likes school and when Bokko because I like when mamma gets mad. Goes to school. Also I liked the Christmas play. When everybody wanted to be ghosts. But only Roger and Kenny and Plasker were ghosts. I liked when the big boys went beaver trapping. It was cool. Someday I would like to do it. Hey! Check this book out! Its cool!

I thought The Year of Miss Agnes is an o.k. Book. I mean it has a lot of twists and turns, but it isn't the most exiting book in the world. This has its good parts and bad parts. I do recommend it.

By Gannon, St. Catherine Laboure School, St. Louis, MO

I liked the book Miss Agnes. All the activities were fun. We did packets and stories. As we read the book I began to understand school. School is a place for you to learn things. At school you do fun things and games you have recess and art and gym. You can go to school at a one-room schoolhouse or a school in a big building. Some schools are public and some are private schools. There was a deaf girl named Bokko she used sign language to communicate with other people. Her dad is dead she has a mom and a sister named Frederika. Its a cool book. Its the best book ever. Teachers are the coolest. SCHOOL RULES!!!!!!!!

By; Annette, St. Catherine Laboure School, St. Louis, MO

I liked this book is very interesting . If you are on chapter 2 you donut want to stop reading it. If you donut like books about school you probably wont like it.  Parts of this book are funny. I would recommend this book if you like to read a lot. If you like school books you would love this book.

By: Matt, St. Catherine Laboure School, St. Louis, MO

I liked this book. If you liked kids who find this good teacher and then love school. And one girl now gets to go to school because she was deaf. Some 3rd graders would like this book because it can tell you a lot about Alaska. The kids go summer camp and like it they take fish to school. They go to camp and like it but at the end of this year they did not want to go this time.
