Young Man and the Sea

by

Philbrick Rodman
Grade 5-6

This is a very exciting adventure book.  I was really scared for Skiff when he fell out of his boat and was dragged underwater by the big fish.  But I didn't like that his mother died in the very beginning of the story.

The Young Man and the Sea, by Rodman Philbrick, is about a boy whose name is Skiff.  Skiff  is being bullied by a rich kid and got laughed at because his boat sank.  The book is a funny adventure tale.  I think that grades 4-6 would like this book and kids in 1-3rd grade would not be able to read this chapter book.  I liked this book because it was a good adventure.  The illustrations added to it, too.

The Young Man and the Sea, by Rodman Philbrick, is a realistic fiction book set in a town near the sea.  The main character is a boy named Skiff who has taken to fishing after his mother died.  There is someone else who is making this quite hard, though.  When Skiff’s boat sinks, he knows he has to make the ultimate catch.  If you like books about adventure and determination, then I think this is the book for you.

In the book The Young Man and the Sea a boy named Skiffy has to fix his dad’s fishing boat. Once he is done fixing the hole in the bottom of the boat he has to fix the engine. If he wants to get it fixed really quick it is going to cost him $500. So he has to catch a big tuna fish and sell it at the fishing docks. It is a good realistic fiction book.
