Viewing Our Town's History

Smith's Castle (not a real castle) was the home of Richard Smith, founder of North Kingstown. About 40 colonial soldiers, killed in 1675 in the Great Swamp Fight, are buried here.

The center of our town is the historic village of Wickford.  Every July Wickford hosts a nationally known art show.

Old Narragansett Church (St. Paul's) houses a silver communion service which was a gift from Queen Anne of England in 1706.  Gilbert Stuart, mentioned below, was baptized here in 1756.

There are many 18th and 19th century houses in our town.  One is the John Updike House and  another is the Wickford House pictured here. It was once used as an inn but is now a private home.

Gilbert Stuart, the artist whose most well known work is the portrait of George Washington, was born in our town.  His home is a popular tourist attraction.

Casey Farm was built during colonial times and is still a working farm.  Tours and school field trips show what farming was like before modern tools.

The Brandaris is a WWII vessel responsible for the evacuation of approximately 300 people during the Battle of Dunkirk.  This historic ship, now anchored in the waters bordering our town, maybe chartered and toured.
