A MIXED MENU OF MATHEMATICS                   RIMTA FALL MEETING 10/1/09

RIMTA’s Family Math Night format is set up in the following way:

Each topic will be organized at a table with the indicated person as facilitator.  Hands-on activities and investigations will be on-going with complete directions provided.  This is not designed to be teacher-led instruction, but, rather, a “student” oriented investigation of the topic with the teacher/instructor being a facilitator rather than a lecturer.

Unit Origami – Lynn Rakatansky

Learn the basics of using origami in the middle school classroom.  You will learn how to make origami “units”, put them together to make a variety of solid shapes and how to incorporate these into your teaching.  You will leave with one or more “units” and/or shapes.

Bungee Barbee – Steve Levesque

Steve will have his participants explore the length that a weight (Barbee doll) will fall when attached to a flexible line (bungee) and dropped from a variety of heights.  An exercise in data collection and analysis that will grab student interest in the classroom.

Elementary Math Games – Cindy Englehard

Math games grab student’s interest in the classroom; here are a collection of games that are classroom-tested for elementary that will help move student thinking forward in enjoyable ways

Middle/Secondary Math Games – Sue Osberg

Activities and games for the middle and secondary classroom that are designed to help students practice basics and provide the “drill” so needed in interesting ways.

Data and Statistics – Mary Sullivan

Mary will focus on the 2010 census and provide a variety of interesting data and statistics activities and investigations for multiple levels.

Algebra/Geometry Connection – Kees deGroot

Kees will provide hands-on activities that will explore the connection between algebra and geometry.  Guaranteed to pique your interest and that of your students as well as challenge your students to move their thinking forward.

Pasta Conics – Ray Morin

Ray does some interesting things with pasta – participants will explore on their own, in pairs or in groups, to find out how to model the conic sections using pasta.  Sure to grab your interest and will get your students thinking about conics….and lunch!

Numeracy – Gina Kilday

Gina will have her new Rek-En-Reks available so participants can see how to use them in the elementary classroom for numeracy and arithmetic operations.

Designer Math – Patty Usenia

This year’s (Spring 2010) Designer Math program will be Going Green.  Students will investigate how math can be related to the environment.  Patty will have preliminary information about Designer Math, how to get your students interested, how to use this in your classroom, how to register, and will provide more details about next spring’s contest.

NCTM’s – Calculation Nation – self directed

NCTM has a new link on its website: Calculation Nation.  Log on and try some of the games included here.  Easy, fun and sure to engage your students!
