About RINET Policies Acceptable Use Policy

The purpose of RINET's network is to provide high quality, affordable technology services to Rhode Island's schools and municipalities. Our network uses high-speed digital communication to enable members to access resources for education and government. RINET's services provide access to broader regional, national and international networks. In general, RINET and its network support the missions of our members.

This policy applies to all RINET members, not to be superseded be any local acceptable use policy. All members are responsible for maintaining and enforcing local acceptable use policies that are compliant with any applicable legislation.

Acceptable Use

Network use by RINET members and their constituencies that is in support of education or state and local government is acceptable.
Network use that is consistent with the purposes of RINET is acceptable.
Any network traffic that originates within the RINET network and moves to other networks must conform to the acceptable use policies of those subsequent networks.

Unacceptable Use

Communications that violate Rhode Island, federal or international laws are unacceptable.
Activities designed to interfere with the ability of other users to make effective use of the network are unacceptable.
Resale of network access is unacceptable.
Providing network access to other organizations and for commercial purposes is unacceptable.
Using the network in a harmful or harassing manner is unacceptable.

The above statements of policy are not meant to be exhaustive. The RINET Board of Directors is the final authority on questions of acceptable use of the network. Until an issue is resolved, questionable use should be considered unacceptable.

Enforcement

RINET members are responsible for seeing that their communities are aware of and follow this policy in letter and in spirit.
Members are expected to take all reasonable measures, given the constraints of technology and management practices, to ensure that traffic entering RINET from other networks conforms to this acceptable use policy. Conversely, members are similarly expected to avoid having traffic from their organizations violate the policies of connecting networks that carry RINET traffic.
