RINET Dial-up Instructions for Windows 95 Version A - May 2001

This handout is to be used with Windows 95 Version A or older only. If you are running Windows 95 Version B, use the handout entitled Dialup Instructions for Windows 95 Version B. To determine which version of Windows 95 you are running, do the following:
With the right mouse button, click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop. With the left mouse button, select Properties. The System Properties window will open, with the General tab selected. Your version will be under the System: description, below the line ‘Microsoft Windows 95’. If you have version a, the number designation will be 4.00.950a; if your version is older than a, it may be 4.00.950 only. If you have version B, the designation will be 4.00.950 B and you need to consult Dialup Instructions for Windows 95 Version B.

Step 1: Adding Dial-up Networking to Windows 95

1. Click on the Start button, then point to Settings, then click on Control Panel.
2. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
3. You will see a screen with 3 tabs at the top of the windows. Click on the Windows Setup tab.
4. Double-click on the Communications item.
5. Click in the box to the left of Dial-Up Networking, then click the OK button. Click the OK button again. If Windows asks for a computer name, enter your RINET computer userid (for example, RIDE1234) . If Windows asks for a workgroup name, enter RINET.
6. Click on the Start button, click on Shutdown, and select Restart Windows 95 or Restart the Computer. Then click on the Yes button.
7. After the machine has restarted Windows, you may be asked to supply a username and password. If so, use your computer userid for the username, and leave the password entry blank. Hit the Enter key. Click OK.

Step 2: Configuring Dial-up Networking

1. If the Control Panel is not open, click on the Start button, then point to Settings, then click on Control Panel.
2. Double-click on the Network icon.
3. You will see a screen with 3 tabs at the top: Configuration, Identification, and Access Control. Click on the Configuration tab if not already selected.
4. To add the TCP/IP protocol, use the following procedure: 5. After the restart, if you are asked to enter your network password for Microsoft Networking, just click OK without entering anything. Then, if the Control Panel is not open, click on Start, point to Settings, and click on Control Panel. Double-click on the Network icon.
6. Double-click on the TCP/IP or the TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter item. You may have to scroll down the Network Components window to locate it.
7. You should get the TCP/IP Properties screen.

Step 3: Creating a Dial-Up Icon

1. After the restart, if you are asked to enter your network password for Microsoft Networking, just click OK without entering anything. Double-click on the My Computer icon located on the desktop.
2. Double-click on the Dial-up Networking folder. If this is your first time using the Dial-Up Networking feature, click on the Next button of the Welcome to Dial-up Networking screen. Otherwise, double-click on the Make New Connection icon.
3. You will be asked to name the dial-up icon. The best name to give the icon is the telephone number you will be using to dial in. For example, type RINET xxx-xxxx where xxx-xxxx represents the telephone number that the modem is going to be dialing. The dial-up numbers are:

Dial-up Lines: All locations should now use 455-0268
Modem Settings: ASCII, 8 Data Bits, 1 Stop Bit, No Parity

4. Click Next. Enter the area code and tab to the telephone number box; enter the number (again) that your modem will be dialing to connect. Dashes may be used.
5. Click on the Next button. You will receive confirmation that the item has been created. Click on the Finish button.
6. Click on the new dial-up icon using the right mouse button.
7. Using the left mouse button, point to Properties and click .
8. Click the Configure... button.
9. Click the Connection tab. Ensure the following settings: Data Bits = 8, Parity = None, and Stop Bits = 1.
10. Click the Options tab. Click on the box for Bring up Terminal Window After Dialing and click the OK button.
11. Click the Server Type button. The Type of Dial-Up Server should be set to PPP, Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.
12. Ensure the Enable software compression and TCP/IP boxes are the only ones checked. Un-check any other boxes.
13. Click the TCP/IP Settings button. Click the Specify name server addresses button and enter 131.109.31.100 into the Primary DNS section. Click the OK button.
14. Make sure the Use IP Header Compression and the Use Default Gateway on Remote Network boxes are checked.
15. Click the OK button again, and then click OK again.

Step 4: Dialing the Telephone and Connecting

1. If Dial-up Networking is not open, double-click on the My Computer icon, then double-click on the Dial-upNetworking folder.
2. Double-click on the RINET xxx-xxxx icon which represents the telephone number you wish to dial. The Connect To window will open. No items need to be filled in here. Ensure that the telephone number is correct.
3. Click the Connect button. The modem should dial the telephone number, and once the modem on the other end responds, you will receive a Post-Dial Terminal Screen.
4. You are now connected to the RINET Terminal Server. After the colon, type in the information as instructed below. 5. A message from the Terminal Server will fly by very quickly. Press Function Key F7 or the Continue button to finalize the connection.
6. You will now see a timer (Duration:) on the screen, telling you how long you have been connected. You may minimize this window (but do not close it), and run any software such as Netscape, Eudora, or QWS3270.

Note: To automate Step 4 for subsequent dial-ups, see Writing a Dial-up Script for Windows 95 below.

Step 5: Hanging up the Telephone

1. Click the Disconnect button. Your telephone will hang up and the window will disappear.
2. If you minimized the Connect To window, click on the RINET xxx-xxxx item on the strip which appears at the bottom of the monitor screen and click the Disconnect button.

OPTIONAL - Writing a Dial-up Script for Windows 95

The steps below will automate Step 4: Dialing the Telephone and Connecting which was explained above. However, you must have completed all of the previous steps before you can attempt to automate the process with the instructions that follow.

Step 1: Installing Windows 95 Scripting Software

 
1. Insert the Windows 95 installation CD into your machine. If you do not have a CD-ROM drive, check your user manual for adding new programs from set-up diskettes. This may not apply to laptops. Additional CD-ROM files can be downloaded from the Web at:
http://www.windows.microsoft.com
2. Click on the Start button, then point to Settings, then click on Control Panel.
3. Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
4. You will see a screen with three tabs at the top of the windows. Click on the Windows Setup tab.
5. Click on the Have Disk button, then the Browse button.
6. Click on the Drives pull-down arrow and select the CD-ROM drive or diskette drive for your machine. 7. Select the item listed in the left window; it may be called rnaplus.inf or maplus.inf.
8. Click the OK button, then click the OK button again.
9. Click the box to the left of the item SLIP and Scripting for Dial-Up Networking and click the Install button.
10. Once the installation has completed, click OK button to exit.

Step 2: Configuring the Dial-Up Scripting Tool

1. Click on the Start button, then point to Programs, then to Accessories, then click on Dial-Up Scripting Tool.
2. You will see a screen called Dial-Up Scripting Tool. In it, you should see a connection called RINET xxx-xxxx created after the installation of the Dial-Up Networking Software. Select this item by clicking on it.
3. In the window to the right, type rinet.scp (under the File Name heading), then click on the Edit button. Confirm that you want to create a new file; you will then be placed into the Windows Notepad editor.
4. Type in the information below exactly as it appears, substituting username with your username (e.g., ride1234) also; substituting PASSWORD with your password. Be aware that this allows others to see your password if they use your machine!

5. When you have typed in this script, click on the File menu at the top of the window, and click on Save.
6. Then click on the File menu at the top of the window again, and click on Exit. You will be brought back to the Dial-Up Scripting Tool window.
7. Make sure that the boxes for Step through script and Start terminal screen minimized are not checked.
8. Click the Apply button, then click on the Close button.
9. Double-click on the My Computer icon at the top of the screen, and then double-click on the Dial-Up Networking folder.
10. Using the right mouse button, click on the RINET xxx-xxxx icon, then click on Properties.
11. Click on the Configure button, then click on the Options tab at the top of the window.
12. Make sure the box for Bring up Terminal Window After Dialing is not checked.
13. Click the OK button, then click the OK button again.
14. Click on the Start button, then click on Shut Down, then click on Restart the Computer.

Step 3: Dialing and Making a Connection

1. Double-click on the My Computer icon, then double-click on the Dial-Up Networking folder.
2. Double-click on the RINET xxx-xxxx icon. The machine should do the rest of the work for you.
