RINET Dial-up Instructions
Windows XP - Version 2002 (Updated 12/1/05)

Step 1. Creating an automated Script File

Note: Be aware, if someone were to open this script file on your machine,
they will be able to see your RINETID and PASSWORD.

1.1 Highlight the following text

Press CTRL C to copy the selected text

1.2 Open Notepad
Click on the Start Button
Select All Programs
Select Accessories
Select Notepad

1.3 Press CTRL V to paste the text into Notepad

1.4 Edit the file
Overwrite RINETID with your RINETID (e.g., ride1234)
And overwrite PASSWORD with your PASSWORD
Be sure you enter your RINETID and password exactly,
including upper and lower case letters


1.5 Save the File

Select File
Select Save As

Where:

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\RAS
OR
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RAS

Filename: rinet.scp
Save as type: select All Files.
Click Save, and close Notepad.


Step 2: Creating a RINET Dial-Up Icon

Notes: Screens may vary somewhat due to Windows Updates.
These Instructions are current as of December, 2005.

To create a Dial-Up icon, you must be logged in to Windows XP with an account that has at least Standard (Power Users) access rights. If you are using a restricted user account, log in to Windows XP using an account with Standard or Administrator rights before proceeding, or contact your system administrator.

2.1 Create your Internet Connection

Select Start
Select Control Panel (switch to category view, if necessary)

Select Network and Internet Connections


 

Pick a Control Panel Icon
Select Internet Options




Select Connections Tab
Select Setup…



This starts a wizard.
Select Next



Select Connect to the Internet
Select Next


Select Setup my connection manually
Select Next

Select Connect using a dial-up modem
Select Next


2.2 Enter ISP Dialing information

In the ISP Name Field
Enter RINET (This will name the icon - you can name it anything you want)
Select Next


Phone Number Field
455-0268
(This is a local call from all RI residence lines)

The computer will dial just like a phone, if you need a local access code or want to enter a line feature you should enter it in the phone number field. Use a comma for a "pause".

(example: If you dial 9 to get an external line enter 9,455-0268
or if you dial *70 to cancel call waiting, enter *70,455-0268)

(Note: you can make more than one dialing icon if you need to.
Example, you might make one to dial from home and another to dial from the your office or a hotel.)

Select Next



2.3 Enter Internet Account information

It is not necessary to enter any information here

Do not select Make this the default Internet connection

Select Next



Select Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop
Select Finish



Step 3: Complete Configuration of Icon Properties


Select the RINET Icon on your Desktop

Select Properties


3.1 Select General tab
Select Configure

3.1.1 - Modem Configuration


Select OK

3.2 Select Options tab

Dialing Options
Select Display progress while connecting.
All other options should be unchecked.

Redialing options
Suggested settings shown in pictures

3.3 Select Security Tab

Security Options

Select Typical

Set Validate my idently as follows: to Allow unsecured password

Interactive logon and scripting

Select Run Script

Select Browse to find your script that you created in Step 1
find: c:WINNT\System32\ras\rinet.scp
Select Open

3.4 Select Networking Tab

Type of dial-up server I am calling:
Select: PPP:Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet from drop down box

This connection uses the following items:
Check Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Check QoS Packet Scheduler (default is checked)

Select Properties




3.4.1 General> Networking> TCP/IP > Properties

Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
Select Use the following DNS Server addresses
Primary DNS server: 131.109.31.100
Alternate DNS server: 128.148.128.9


3.4.2 Select Advanced

Select General Tab

Check Use default gateway on the network
Check Use IP header compression


3.4.2.1 Select DNS Tab

The DNS number will be filled in from the previous screen.

Select Append primary and connection specific DNS Suffixes
Select Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix
Select Register this connection's addresses in DNS

Select >OK
Select >OK
Select >OK

Your PC will dial this connection now.





To use your RINET connection

Double click the RINET icon on your desktop

OR

Click on Start and Select Connect to RINET

 

Please note: If you did not create an automatic script file, then you will need to show the terminal window. The preferred method is to create a script. However, if you do not want to, you must make the following changes to the above instructions.

Check Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc.

Run Script should not be checked.
