The Urban Collaborative was created in
1989 by a group of educators who were seeking to give a
group of at-risk students a real second chance to succeed in
school. Working together with people from the public and
private sectors, this group created a small, independent,
public school, which these students could attend to get back
on track in school.
Since that time, UCAP has served over
1500 students, and most of these students have completed
school or are in the process of doing so. UCAP has broken
the mold of traditional public school in many ways beyond
its innovative structure. It is my hope that UCAP will
continue to seek out ways to improve itself and to influence
the discussion about improving public schools in the United
States. Clearly, UCAP has much to offer to the debate about
serving children whose educational opportunities are often
limited by the chance of birth.
UCAPs story is a story about adults and
children struggling together to realize the potential that
exists in urban youth. Along with the staff at UCAP, I
invite you to learn what you can from our website and to
give us a call at school if we can help. Linked to this
website are several articles and other information that you
may find helpful.
