UCAP Library Media Program

The UCAP school library media center (SLMC) mission is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information by

  • providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats

  • providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas

  • working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students

This mission is built upon the Information Power mission of the school library media program as stated in Information Power Building Partnerships for Learning published by the American Library Association (ALA).

The goals of the UCAP School Library Media Center are to:

  • Provide leadership, instruction, and consulting assistance in the use and integration of instructional and information technology.

  • Provide and maintain a quality collection of professional development materials.

  • Promote collaborative teaching and learning experiences that encourage critical thinking and selective use of information.

  • Provide a stimulating learning environment that encourages individual and group use of the media center.

  • Encourage creation of knowledge through effective use of information, concepts, and ideas.

  • Facilitate the development and implementation of a research process throughout the school.

  • Develop an appreciation for diversity in all forms by providing a wide spectrum of resources and learning activities.

  • Provide quality resources to promote literacy and to support teaching and learning.

  • Promote an appreciation of literature and stimulate an appreciation of reading.

  • All of these activities assume a wide range of reading levels and interests.

The UCAP SLMC student skills and objectives are in accordance with the Rhode Island Information Literacy standards:

  • Standard 1- The student recognizes the importance of information to a democratic society.

  • Standard 2- The student accesses information efficiently and effectively.

  • Standard 3- The student uses information accurately and creatively

  • Standard 4- The student pursues information related to personal interests

  • Standard 5- The student evaluates information critically and competently

  • Standard 6- The student appreciates literature and other creative expressions of

  • Standard 7- The student participates effectively in groups to pursue and generate information

  • Standard 8- The student strives for excellence in information seeking and knowledge generation

  • Standard 9- The student practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology

The skills and objectives are:

  1. Student reads 25 books or equivalent per year at grade level.

  2. Student recognizes the need for information and assesses their assignments to determine what information is needed.

  3. Student recognizes that accurate and comprehensive information is the basis for intelligent decision-making.

  4. Student formulates questions based on information needs and revises, adds, and deletes questions as their information needs change.

  5. Student identifies a variety of diverse potential print/ non-print sources of information.

  6. Student develops and uses successful strategies for locating information.

  7. Student determines accuracy, relevance, and comprehensiveness of information sources.

  8. Student distinguishes among fact, point of view, and opinion.

  9. Student identifies inaccurate and misleading information and can explain why this information can lead to faulty conclusions.

  10. Student uses the index, table of contents, search engines, and topical sentences in paragraphs from a variety of sources to identify appropriate information analyzing for relevancy.

  11. Student uses a variety of graphic organizers to obtain and organize information.

  12. Student synthesizes information into a variety of appropriate formats to present or display information.

  13. Student integrates new information into ones own knowledge.

  14. Student applies information in critical thinking and problem solving.

  15. Student routinely uses a wide range of sources to explore personal interests.

  16. Student evaluates information to make informed personal decisions.

  17. Students selects reading material from a variety of genres, identifies and recommends authors, series, etc., and analyzes plot, character, and setting.

  18. Student analyzes clarity, impact, and importance of information presented in a variety of formats.

  19. Student evaluates information seeking processes at each stage as it occurs making adjustments as necessary.

  20. Student uses a model to identify gaps in research strategies.

  21. Student respects the principles of equitable access to information and the principles of intellectual freedom.

  22. Student does not plagiarize and uses appropriate formats to cite sources.

  23. Student follows school technology policies and procedures to access information.

  24. Student shares knowledge with others.

  25. Student respects others ideas and backgrounds and acknowledges their contributions to their knowledge.

  26. Student collaborates with others both in person and through technologies to identify information problems and seek solutions.
