If you want to achieve good grades in school, you need to come to school prepared, engage in the classroom instruction and activities, do your homework, and study. No one ever said the climb to the top would be easy. But anything that’s worth achieving often requires hard work.

Take a look at Middletown Public Schools. It used the “roll up your sleeves” approach and achieved something no other K-12 public school system in the state did in 2004.  Through a tremendous amount of hard work on the part of many, all five schools within the district achieved the highest designation of “high performing and improving” from the Rhode Island Department of Education. And just recently, two Middletown schools – the Joseph H. Gaudet Middle School and Middletown High School – were named as Regents Commended Schools for improving their English Language Arts and Mathematics scores for two years in a row. None of these accolades is easy to achieve. They were all accomplished through sheer determination, perseverance and hard work.

Congratulations to each and every person who played a role in helping the school district achieve these incredible recognitions from the state. Your hard work has clearly paid off!

While we redefine our Strategic Plan as we progress as a school district, our purpose and commitment continues to be “reaching higher standards.” Teachers, staff, the school committee, parents and the community have met the challenge of reaching higher standards as was demonstrated in 2004. Our focus as we move forward will be to raise the bar even higher to stay on top, to exceed our expectations, and to continue to demonstrate to the rest of Rhode Island that Middletown’s students are among the best performing and best prepared in the state.

Through the pages of the district’s second Accountability Report, you’ll get a clear indication of the in-depth curricular and instructional changes that have been put in place to help us improve student achievement. You’ll notice that Middletown offers a wide range of multi-faceted programs both during schools hours and after hours that are truly making a difference in not only the way our students are learning their standards-based courses, but the way they’re performing when test time rolls around. Please take the time to review the information in this report. We believe it clearly demonstrates that Middletown’s focus on improving student performance is paying off!

As always, we are grateful for all who are part of the Middletown Public School system. We encourage you to share your comments and suggestions with us.
