¦               Special Needs Population:  73 students

¦               LEP Population – 15 students from over ten countries

¦               Dynamic classroom teachers

¦               Our learning community is further strengthened by an active Parent Teacher Group (PTG), caring volunteers and citizens committed to education

¦               Teachers participated in year 2 of Science and Literacy Integration Projections (SLIP)

¦               Teachers implement lesson study

¦               Three teachers and the principal participate in Principles of Learning training

¦               Literacy Lab Classroom is being established in grade one

¦               All classrooms implement readers and writers workshop

School Goals . . .

SIT Purpose Statement

The Aquidneck School Improvement Team will gather information and analyze data in order to set goals for our school community that will promote higher student learning and achievement as reflected in state assessment scores.

Goal 1

All Aquidneck students will read and write throughout the content areas (math, social studies, science and health).  Students will develop a clear purpose with in their organized writing by using effective sentence construction and meaningful vocabulary.

Goal 2

All Aquidneck students who have been identified as below grade level in reading will be targeted and increase their fluency and comprehension.

Goal 3

All Aquidneck students will engage in additional problem solving experiences, using exemplars.

Highlights/Accomplishments . . .

¦     We maintain a strong “SIT”- School Improvement Team- with a focus on student learning

¦     We are a school committed to Learning Walks and the Principles of Learning.

¦     We had six teachers participate in the SLIP initiative (Science and Literacy Integration Project).

¦     We have two teachers working to attain National Board Certification.

¦     We have Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop in all classrooms at Aquidneck.

¦     We have been conducting lesson study as part of our professional development.

¦     We are in year three of a standards-based report card.  It was generated electronically this year.

¦     We have an active parent group and volunteers are in our building daily.

Our Mission . . .

In partnership with students, parents and community the mission of Forest Avenue School is to create a positive, safe and supportive environment that fosters curiosity, creativity, caring and a love of learning.  Students at Forest Avenue will become proficient readers, writers and problem solvers.

To achieve this goal we will provide all necessary safety nets and support services such as literacy coaches, math coaches, and community resources enabling all students to meet the standards to succeed in the 21st century.

ˇ     More than ten parents participate in the School Improvement Team (SIT). 

ˇ     Parents are involved in the decision-making processes of the school.

School Goals . . .

The School Improvement Team (SIT) plan focuses on improving instruction in reading, writing and problem solving in Math.  These goals were created using state test data.  Our short and long-range goals and targets are data driven and we are diligent in not varying from our instructional plan.

 

Highlights/Accomplishments . . .

¦                We are a very diverse population that has raised its test scores consistently in the last five years.

¦                We are a safe school.  Students feel safe and secure and find the atmosphere extremely conducive to learning.

¦                We have after-school learning programs and day care.

¦                Teachers receive professional development  in Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop and in math Exemplars.

¦                Teachers continue to implement and mesh standards with Principles of Learning Training

¦                The Parent Teacher Group (PTG) and Principal offer monthly forums for conversations with parents.

¦                Our Literacy Support Person conducts weekly professional development to help teachers develop a deeper understanding and better implementation in Literacy.

¦                The school has many after school programs, (Art Club, Foreign Language Class, Bringing Up Grades Club) that are offered year round.

¦     A major accomplishment is that parents, teachers and administration continually work together to make Forest Avenue School the best place it can be for the STUDENTS.
