a.       Bookshelves: Ongoing Project

The facilities department continues to build and install bookcases at the High School and Gaudet.  The elementary schools will be scheduled next.

b.      Elevator improvements: Update

The State is requiring the following elevator improvements for ADA and Fire Codes for Certificate of Operation:

a.   Forest Ave Elementary School Passenger Elevator: hands free phone for ADA

b.  Aquidneck Elementary School Passenger Elevator: Stop switch, light, metal plates to cover exposed wood in hoist way (fire hazard).

c.   Gaudet Middle School: ADA compliant non-contact detector with Microprocessor fail safe, hydraulic elevator controller for emergency recall operation, and hydraulic jack unit.

Parts ordered. Work to be performed in July so school won’t be disrupted.

c.       Centrex phone system: Update

b.      Cox Communications came to Middletown to review possible plans for a Centrex system.  They met with Linda Savastano, Rosemarie Kraeger, Cathy McLeish, Joe Krupowicz and Beth Perrin.

c.       We are waiting for the cost of this system.  Because of monetary concerns, this may be the stop gap needed at this time (instead of IP system).  We won’t know until we get the price.  Linda is analyzing the cost of the system as it compares to our current vendor (Verison).

4.       Door Replacement, Repairs, and Upgrades and Security: Update (CIP)

a.       Mulleng Systems Management wrote an RFP (MHS: exterior cameras, swipe card and badge system, monitor, door “buzzer” and DVR.  JFK/Forest/Gaudet: front door camera, monitor and buzzer. Aquidneck already has this system.).

b.      Ads were placed in Newport News, Providence Journal and Online.

c.       Cathy McLeish and Mr. Mulleng evaluated the proposals.

d.      They will make a recommendation to the School Committee at the May meeting following system demonstrations and interviews of the top two vendors.

5.       Paving RFP: Update (CIP)

a.       RFP was advertised in Providence Journal, Newport News and on the school website.

b.      DEM approved Freshwater Wetlands permit at the west parking lot of Gaudet Middle School.  We will locate two new storm drain catch basins in the west parking lot. (see copy of permit enclosed)

II.                 MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL

1.       Architect Study Horticulture Courtyard at MHS:

Kaestle-Boos has quoted a “not to exceed” hourly proposal when evaluating this courtyard.  The proposal was quote in three parts.  This was done so that Middletown Public School’s can evaluate each part and decide on the feasibility of moving onto more detailed plans. (See enclosed proposal)

a.   Preliminary Code Analysis and Exist Condition Review (includes preliminary cost analysis.

b.   In-depth code research and cost estimating

c.    Impact study and design: if doors are required, how this affects other areas of the school.

OSHA has consented to allow the current program to stay open until the end of the school year. (See attached letter by Mrs. Kraeger to Mr. Ruscito)

2.       Warranty Work: FYI

a.       Roof leak over cafeteria: Chaffee installed this Firestone roof and has been called for warranty repairs.

b.      Leak at foundation between new science rooms and old building: DePasqual has been called for warranty repairs.

3.       I.T.  Server Room/I.T. Work Room/IT Storage: In Progress

The old “IBM” room (Rm. 8) has been divided into two areas:  Work room and Server Room.

A workbench for doing computer repairs and an area for storing parts; equipment, etc. is scheduled.  Plans are being made with the assistance of the IT Department.

4.       Odor in Administration/Guidance Offices: Complete

The odor seems to have emanated from a solenoid that was “burning” out.  This solenoid was in the ceiling between Mr. Ruscito’s office and the store.  It is part of the utility emergency control for the old science rooms.  The solenoid has been replaced and rewired.  In addition, we are buying alarmed safety covers for the ‘panic buttons’ in the labs as students pressing them on the way out of the rooms seems to be a continuous problem.

5.   Interior Painting: Near completion – 95%

The Facilities Team is painting the remaining classrooms that couldn’t be done last year.  This was requested by Mr. Ruscito in preparation for the NEASC visit.  We anticipate that all rooms will be completed by the end of April break.

6.   Valley Road Sign: In progress

This sign is being designed by Sign-A-Rama.  We hope to have the sign complete before graduation.

III.       GAUDET MIDDLE SCHOOL

1.       Painting Schedule:  Continuation

The first level is complete. The second level is about 85% complete.

2.   Sound System: No new info

The PTG from Gaudet School has ordered a new sound system for the Cafetorium. This is scheduled to be installed during April break.

3.   Data and electrical for Computers:     (Bond Update) Complete

Gaudet School is now completely wired.

d.      Roof Top Chiller: (Update)

At the end of last cooling season we were having some problems with a few coil leaks in the new chiller.  McQuay (subcontractor of Honeywell) had an engineer evaluate this problem and they thought that the best way to permanently fix this problem would be to replace the all the chiller coils.  McQuay started this project the last week of March.  It will be complete the first week of April.

IV.       FOREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Exterior Trim LeadLock and Paint: (Ongoing Maintenance and Lead Encasement) This will start again after April break.

V.                 J. F. KENNEDY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Installation is complete, and caulking started the week of April 4th.

2.       New blinds for the windows in front and north side of the building have been received. (not bond item) To be installed during April break.

VI.              AQUIDNECK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (Repairs complete)

An engineer from Fury Roofing has been out to look at the pitched roof at the cafeteria side of the “new wing”.  Fury has tried to repair a leak several times without success.  Temporary repairs have been made, but we are waiting for good weather to assess the need for further work.
