The Site Council functions as the school’s school improvement team. It has been organized to enact policies on all matters for Middletown High School that are not in place through federal, State of Rhode Island or Middletown School Committee Mandates. The Policies over which the council have jurisdiction include:
The Council consists of 27 members, including 9 students (each class President, the President of the Student Council, and 4 students elected from each grade level by students within that grade level, 9 teachers (each Director and 5 others elected by teachers) and 9 members selected by the Superintendent (the Building Principal, Associate Principal, Assistant Superintendent, 3 community members and 3 parents). Council membership is comprised of this 3-3-3 model of student-faculty-parent/community to give MHS the best possible representation of its three most important constituencies.
When does the Site council meet? The Site Council generally meets on the first Tuesday and third Thursday of every month. Tuesday meetings are held in the evening from 6:30 to 8:00pm in Room 212 at MHS. Thursday Meetings are held in the afternoon from 2:30 to 4:00pm again in Room 212. This staggering calendar of meeting dates is intended to meet the needs of the varying schedules of its members. All meetings are open to students, faculty and parents. It must be noted, however, that only Site Council Members have voting privileges.
How was the Site Council established? The process for developing the Site Council began in 2003 with members of the MPS Administration/School Committee, MHS Administration and Faculty and Staff. In the four years that have since passed, a number of models for re-organizing the school’s improvement and group decision-making efforts were submitted by the above mentioned stakeholders. Each model was discussed, reviewed and re-worked until the current model was established and approved.
