Annual Health Notification

The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) requires that Middletown Public Schools inform the occupants of its buildings, parents, and outside contractors about the presence of asbestos-containing materials within its buildings. Management Plans have been developed outlining how asbestos-containing materials will be handled in each of the school buildings.

Middletown Public Schools is committed to remaining a safe and healthy environment. We will continue, as in the past, to monitor, inspect and repair any asbestos containing materials. Twice each year inspections are carried out to access the condition of asbestos-containing materials within the schools. In addition, trained staff has been instructed on how to identify materials that may possibly contain asbestos and the need to report any damage to asbestos containing materials immediately to the Director of Facilities Management for encapsulation or removal.

The Middletown Public Schools keeps a complete copy of its Asbestos Management Plan, 3-year re-inspections reports conducted by an independent Environmental Management Company, 6-mouth surveillance reports and remediation reports at the Oliphant Administration Building, 26 Oliphant Lane, Middletown, RI 02842 in the Director of Facilities Management Office.

2. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of Rhode Island require that Middletown Public Schools inform the occupants of its buildings and parents of its Pest Control Program. Middletown Public Schools uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM). IPM is the balanced use of all available pest control methods. The idea is simple. All available prevention and control methods are used to keep pests from reaching damaging levels. Pesticides are only used when absolutely necessary. The goal is to maintain acceptable quality and productivity while minimizing costs and any adverse effects pesticides may have on our environment.

If and when pesticides are needed by the Middletown Public Schools, Terminex is our contracted vendor. Under normal circumstances notices will be posted at the entrance to the effected school building 24 hours before chemical use. Every effort will be made to use chemical treatment responsibly and at times when children are not in school, such as, after school hours or on weekends. If treatment must occur during school hours, notices will be posted at the entrance of the school describing the action taken. Faculty and staff will be notified in advance to keep students away from the treated area for the appropriate amount of time.

Refer questions about Middletown Public Schools IPM Program to the Director of Facilities Management. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are located at Oliphant Administration Building, 26 Oliphant Lane, Middletown, RI 02842 in the Director of Facilities Management Office.
