FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Dear Colleagues & Parents:

This edition of the Middletown Standard is largely devoted to reporting our school performance categories. The school performance categorization is based on cumulative student achievement in the areas of Mathematics and English Language Arts (Reading and Writing) over the last three years (2000, 2001 and 2002).

Overall, each of our schools demonstrate that emphasis has been placed on improved teaching and learning. We continue to move in the right direction, increasing the number of students to the high performance area and reducing the number of students from the low performance area. Thus, we are closing the equity gaps in performance among groups of students. School Improvement Teams are serious about this work, focusing support on Mathematics and Literacy, refocusing resources to support professional development and identify strategies to address particular challenges each school faces.

I want to commend the staff for their results-driven attitude. Rigorous standards for all students, a curriculum aligned to these standards and high quality standards-based assessments will continue to hold us accountable, enabling us to provide the best opportunities for the children of Middletown.

Sincerely,
Rosemarie K. Kraeger
Superintendent
