In addition to the General Rules and Policies printed in the National FFA Career Development Event Handbook (pages 1-8), the following also apply:
- Greenhand Contests shall be limited to first year High School FFA members regardless of Grade level. Except in Greenhand Creed, where National rules apply.
- Star State Greenhand shall be selected from the previous years Star Chapter Greenhands, who submit the required application(s), (i.e., Star Chapter 00, shall compete for Star State
01). The Star will be named at the Annual State FFA Convention.
- It shall be the responsibility of each Chapter to pay registrations, entry fees for CDE's, insurance fees, etc. for its members participation in all activities.
- All event registrations and fees must be in the office of the Executive Secretary, not less than 10 days prior to the due date at Regional or National FFA office.
- Competition in "State FFA Contests" (those in which no further competition is available) shall be limited to High School FFA members through August of their graduating year.
- A member may not compete in a State level contest if he/she has previously competed in the same contest at a regional or National level. Contest "winners" shall be eligible to compete in
the same State contest if they do not advance to regional or National level.
- No contestant shall be allowed to participate in a contest, apply for Degree advancement, or be a voting delegate unless his/her dues are current.
- State Stars in Farming, Agribusiness, Agriculture Placement and Agriscience shall be named from those applying for the State FFA Degree in any year. In addition, any member who
receives his/her State FFA Degree prior to graduation from high school and was not named as Star may reapply for the Star recognition in the following year. NO member may be named as Star in more than one area.
ANIMAL SCIENCE
All Animal Science CDE's shall be held in conjunction with the Connecticut FFA at the University of Connecticut. Rules will follow those of the Connecticut FFA. Rhode Island chapter teams will be certified if they compete in these contests. CREED SPEAKING
The Rhode Island Creed Speaking CDE shall follow the rules of the National Creed Speaking CDE with the following exceptions:
- There shall be one round of competition.
- There shall be no accuracy deduction.
- Each chapter shall be allowed 8 competitors.
- In case of ties the judges shall confer to declare a winner.
- One timekeeper will be designated.
- 10 points will be deducted for each prompt given by the judges.
- More than 2 prompts shall disqualify the student from receiving monetary awards.
DEMONSTRATION CONTEST
Purpose: To determine the student's ability to communicate verbally and visually a knowledge, understanding,
or skill, which he/she possesses to an assorted group of interested people. Eligibility: A team shall be made up of 1 or 2 FFA members. Subject & Nature of Contest:
- TOPICS - Any area or skill which is agricultural in nature or which deals with topics generally considered under "agriculture" in the broad sense of the word as we know it in the modern FFA.
- PROPS - Table space only will be provided. Other props, supports, materials, etc., must be supplied by contestants.
- VISUAL AIDS - Each demonstration should include the appropriate use of some form of visual aides (graphs, charts, pictures, models, samples, etc.).
- COOPERATION - Where more than one individual is involved, each participant should share approximately equal proportions of the performance.
- APPEARANCE - Contestants shall be in official dress except if demonstration involves work which could soil clothing or impair demonstrator's safety. Then protective clothing shall be worn and safety measures taken.
Time:
- A team's presentation shall take at least 7 minutes and not more than 10 minutes. (Greenhand 5-8 minutes.)
- Two points shall be deducted from the average rating of a team for each minute under the minimum time limit or each minute over the maximum time limit. Judges will be allowed 5
minutes to question teams on subject areas covered.

ENVIRONMENTAL/NATURAL RESOURCES
The FFA winner of the Rhode Island Envirothon shall have the choice of being certified as the
Forestry CDE winner or the Environmental/Natural Resource CDE winner. EXTEMPORANEOUS PUBLIC SPEAKING
The Extemporaneous Public Speaking CDE shall follow the National rules with the following
exceptions:
- Nine topics shall be selected for the event and will include the following categories:
a) agriscience and technology, b) food and fiber systems, and c) urban agriculture.
- In case of ties, judges will confer to select a winner.
FLORICULTURE
The Rhode Island Floriculture CDE shall follow the rules of the National Floriculture CDE with the following exceptions:
- The Ag. Ed. Teachers will select those areas that will be in each year's event. The selection shall be made no later than 4 weeks before the event.
- The number of teams per chapter shall be established by the Ag. Ed. Teachers no less than 4 weeks prior to the event.
FORESTRY
The FFA winner of the Rhode Island Envirothon shall have the choice of being certified as the Forestry CDE winner or the Environmental/Natural Resource CDE winner.
GREENHAND PREPARED PUBLIC SPEAKING
The Greenhand Prepared Public Speaking CDE shall follow the National rules for Prepared Public Speaking with the following exceptions:
- Speeches must be submitted at least 7 days before the contest.
- Each speech shall be a minimum of four minutes and a maximum of six minutes.
- In case of ties, judges will confer to select a winner.
- The National Prepared public Speaking Score Card shall be used for scoring.
LANDSCAPE EXHIBITS
The Landscape Exhibits at the Washington County Fair shall follow the rules and themes of the Big "E" Landscape Exhibit. NURSERY/LANDSCAPE
The Rhode Island Nursery/Landscape CDE shall follow the National rules with the following exceptions:
- Contest areas shall be chosen by the Ag. Ed. Teachers a minimum of 4 weeks prior to the contest date.
- The number of teams allowed per chapter shall be determined by the Ag. Ed. Teachers 4 weeks prior to the contest date.
OPENING & CLOSING CEREMONY
The Opening and Closing Ceremony CDE is designed to develop agricultural leadership by providing
for FFA members participation in public speaking activities and stimulating interest in leadership and citizenship. The participants must be first year members of a chartered Rhode Island FFA chapter who have not
participated in any other public speaking event at the State or National level. Event Procedures:
- A CDE coordinator and three judges will be in charge of this event.
- Each chapter may enter up to two teams.
- Each participant must be in official dress as proscribed in the FFA Manual. Official dress will be scored on each team member, and the average team official dress score will be added to the
final score for their presentation to determine the winner.
- The event officials will randomly determine the competition order. The program chair shall introduce each chapter by order of drawing. Applause shall be withheld until all participants
have competed. Teams may not observe until they have completed their participation.
- At the time of the event, the judges will be seated in different sections of the room in which the event is held. They will score each chapter on the delivery, according to the score sheet provided.
- The team will perform the opening and closing statement as per the Official Manual.
- Only the six constitutional officers and advisor portion will participate. All parts will be performed by team members. (NO ADVISORS WILL PARTICIPATE WITH THEIR TEAM – their part will be performed by a student.)
- The officer team will be responsible for placing station markers around the room as per the attached design. Two minutes will be allowed for set-up.
- The teams shall make no other items of business or transitional statements between the opening and closing ceremony.
- An accuracy judge will check for accuracy during the event and share his/her score with the other judges.

PREPARED PUBLIC SPEAKING
The Prepared Public Speaking CDE shall follow the National rules with the following exceptions:

SAFE TRACTOR OPERATION
The Safe Tractor Operations CDE shall follow the rules of the Big "E" with the following exceptions:
- A tractor operator may elect to not compete in the 4-wheel wagon portion of the contest. However, that operator may not proceed to the Big "E" Regional contest.
- The written test may or may not be used as a part of the scoring.
- A Novice Drivers event may be held for first time drivers if there are sufficient contestants.

WOODSMAN CONTEST
- The Woodsman Contest is a fun event that includes several of the following contests:
Two man cross-cut sawing Log rolling Pulp wood throw for distance and/or accuracy Dot splitting Buck sawing Log Drag
- Both male and female teams are allowed. A mixed team must compete as a male team.
- Several events are held throughout the year (usually sponsored by local chapters).
- The Washington County Fair sponsors a State event each year.
- There is no Regional or National event.
- Each chapter must supply its own equipment unless other arrangements are made.
