Please have students come to school on time, well rested.
I will make up any missed sessions with the students next week.
Thursday's test is 2 hours and a hands on assignment with a partner.
Please do all you can to have your child here on time Thursday morning.

School Counselor and NECAP Test Coordinator
From Mrs. Wharton - School Nurse
Dear Parents/Guardians:
All medications must be administered by the school nurse/teacher
unless a parent comes to school to give the medicine. This includes
over-the-counter medicines, as well as prescription medications. There
are no exceptions to this rule, unless your child has a doctor’s written
permission to carry and self-administer the medication, usually only an
inhaler in this case. This permission must be signed by both the doctor
and parent and furnished to the nurse-teacher, who will have the final
decision. For the safety of all the children, I ask your full cooperation
in this matter. Medicines that are to be given three times per day should
not be sent into school to be given by the school nurse-teacher. It is
fine to give most of these medicines before and after school, and at
bedtime.
Please keep your child home from school if he or she is
obviously sick or has a fever. Rhode Island Department of Health and
Cumberland Public Schools Guidelines state that a child should be
fever-free (a fever being >100.3) without the use of Tylenol and Ibuprofen
for 24 hours before returning to school.
If your child needs to use crutches or a wheelchair short-term
in school, a written letter from the health care provider must be
presented to Mrs. Wharton upon re-entry to school. This child should have
received training on crutch-walking on flat surfaces and stairs before
returning to school and this needs to be documented by the physician/nurse
practitioner. Mrs. Wharton will then assess that the child can use the
crutches safely in school. The safety of your child and all our students
is paramount to us. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation.
The Cumberland Public School System has established a Wellness
Policy that regulates the types of foods that may be sent into the
classroom for a group snack or celebration. A helpful letter regarding
foods and drink acceptable for classroom celebrations was sent home at the
beginning of the school year.
Please understand that any food or drink item brought to school for a
classroom celebration will be sent home if it does not meet the guidelines
set forth by the Cumberland Public Schools Wellness Policy. We appreciate
your cooperation and understanding in advance.
Vision Screenings have been completed for all students. You
have been notified if your child did not perform according to state
standards. If you did receive a notice, please have your child evaluated
by an eye care professional and return the results to Mrs. Wharton as soon
as possible.
Health classes for grades K-3 are slated to begin in November.
We will discuss the difference between being healthy and being sick, how
to stay healthy, and how to keep germs from spreading in K and 1. Good
hand washing will be stressed. Grades 2 and 3 will discuss how germs
spread by touch and we will do a fun activity illustrating that concept in
grade 2. We will also talk about communicable diseases and the immune
system in grade 3. Weekly health classes are slated to begin in late
January for Grade 4. An information letter to grade 4 parents will be
provided well before the classes begin. Grade 5 classes are planned to
begin sometime in March. Again, you will be notified of the class content
before the sessions start.
The state audiology team will be here on to perform hearing
screenings on all K-3 students on March 12, 2011.
