This focus
on women scientists is the result of a mini-grant that was awarded by RIEMA--Rhode
Island Educational Media Association. The implementation of the grant
was modified to allow more time for completion of the project. The original
focus of spotlighting women scientists in March, Women's History Month,
was expanded to include a poetry component for April, Poetry Month.
Please note that the resulting poems should not be used for research as
students exercised a fair amount of poetic license; consequently,
the accuracy of the biography was sometimes sacrificed for the structure
of the poem. The biography books that the students used are part of the
American Women in Science biography series. These short books were written
by Mary Ellen Verheyden-Hiilliard and were published in 1984 by The
Equity Institute (Bethesda, Maryland).
