FUNDRAISING:Most
fundraising is performed by volunteers through the PTG, however, on an
individual basis, teachers raise "points" to purchase books through the
Scholastic and other programs. If you would like to volunteer to
coordinate the Scholastic book sales, you will need to speak directly to
your teacher.
Gift Wrap -- This
fundraiser is the PTG's largest. It produces over half of the
PTG revenues that support the many programs in our school. The kick
off is in early September. Families have 3 weeks to return their
orders. The orders are distributed in late October. Volunteers
help promote the fundraiser, distribute packets for selling the items,
send reminder notices and collect the forms and money. Volunteers
are also needed for a couple of hours in late October to help distribute
the gift wrap and other products on site at the school.
Book Fairs -- The
PTG holds 2 Book Fairs over the course of the school year. The 2
Fairs combined are the PTG's second largest fund raiser. The first
Fair is usually planned for late October and the second one is planned
for late March. These fairs are awesome with a different theme each
time. The kids love them! It is a very labor intensive fund
raiser, and in the past has had some very dedicated volunteers.
Volunteers arrange to have hundreds of new books delivered and set up in
the school library over a 5 day period. Children preview the books
at the beginning of the week and then parents are invited to accompany
their child to the library, at specified times, and help make the purchase.
Volunteers are involved in the planning process, which includes promotion
for the event using a "theme", the setup of the physical environment in
the library, and the break down of the environment.. Volunteers
are also needed for the cash register over the course of the 3 day period
when children can purchase the books.
Big G Boxtops Contest -- The contest is held twice a year -- in the
Fall and in the Spring. Generally, two volunteers promote the boxtop
contest, collect, trim and submit the boxtops collected from the children
and award the winning students with prizes.
Bake Sale -- The
bake sale is held the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. Volunteers
are needed to organize the sales, collect money at the sales, and of course,
to bake for the sale. Recently, the PTG has used the Homeroom
mom list to obtain volunteers for baking, however, when not enough can
be found, the coordinator is responsible for finding volunteer bakers.
Children love the special opportunity to purchase goodies at these sales.
Membership Drive --
To
become a member of the PTG, dues of $10 is required each year. Dues
must be paid in order to vote at the PTG meetings. This money supports
many of the programs in our school. A volunteer is needed to request
the the membership fee, collect the fee and keep a record of those fees
submitted.
Scholastic Book Orders
-- This is a classroom volunteer program. Generally, the teacher
will request a volunteer at the beginning of the year. This program
is great for both the families at Frenchtown and the school. Families
can purchase a wide array of soft and hard cover age appropriate books
at a significant savings. Teachers are also able to
accumulate points to purchase books for their classroom. Volunteers
are needed to package individual orders for the teacher to send them home
with students.

PTG
COMMITTEES
Welcoming committee volunteers -- The welcoming
committee consists of volunteers who provide a "first contact" for families
new to the school. They provide a tour of the school building and
grounds, introduce the PTG to new families and find a "buddy" for the incoming
student.
Technology committee volunteers -- The technology
committee consists of volunteers who will work with the Frenchtown librarian
to develop a short and long-term technology plan, within the framework
of the East Greenwich district plan. The committee works closely
with teachers, parents and the district administrator to acquire funds
for hardware, software and peripherals and to implement the technology
plan.
Security committee volunteers -- The security
committee is an ad-hoc committee and will be activated when security issues
arise. In the past, this committee has explored and addressed playground
safety issues, dismissal policies and facility safety needs. Most
concerns are raised from parents either at PTG meetings or discussions
with the principal.

PROGRAMS
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
-- Typically, two people co chair this program that provides after
school activities, for a week period, twice in the school year -- once
in the Fall and once in the Spring. Volunteers assist where needed
in the programs provided after school and help to sign children in after
school as well as sign children out as they are picked up after the program.
Past programs have included "Pet Responsibility", "Robotics", "French",
"All Sports", etc.
CURRICULUM ENRICHMENT
--
5
volunteer coordinators work with teachers to plan field trips, bring in
enrichment programs and provide other enrichment materials to support curriculum
studies. There is a volunteer for each grade as well as a volunteer
for schooled programs.
CELEBRATE WITH
BOOKS! -- volunteers coordinate the
collection of donated books, and dedicate them by a nameplate to honor
a student's achievement or signify teacher appreciation. The school
librarian compiles a "wish" list of titles specifically for this purpose.
Interested donees contact the Celebrate with Books! coordinator.
SUMMER READING PROGRAM
-- Volunteers provide rewards to
those children who continue to read during the summer vacation. Awards
are distributed in early fall, to those children who submit a list of 5
book titles (along with their authors) they have read over the summer.
CULTURAL
ORGANIZATION OF THE ARTS (COA) -- This is a district wide program,
however, each school provides a volunteer to represent them at monthly
meetings, to recommend new events and to preview prospective programs.
These events are brought to our school. They include things like
dance, theater, story telling, puppetry, mime, etc. The COA events
in the past have included .........................
COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP
PROGRAM -- Guided by teachers, the community partnership volunteers
strive to align available time, talent and financial resources to support
equitable opportunities for all students.
CITIZENS WHO CARE --
A
volunteer from our school meets the first Wednesday of each month at the
Wellness Office in the High School to coordinate educational programs that
address substance abuse (ie. Red Ribbon Day in the fall) and promote wellness
(Wellness Week in the Spring).
TEACHER APPRECIATION
PROGRAM -- Volunteers recognize the dedication of our Frenchtown faculty
and staff throughout the year through a variety of activities.

ONE
TIME SCHOOL EVENTS
ART APPRECIATION
-- Volunteers work with the art teacher
to help children catalog and write a description about the artwork they
will display. Volunteers also help to set up the physical environment
to exhibit the child's artwork at a special evening event. This is
an awesome event where the children's work is showcased in a museum setting.
The children are thrilled to see their work displayed like the professionals.
This event requires many volunteers.
MATH/SCIENCE NIGHT (rotate every
other year) -- Volunteers work to create
a fun night for the children where they are learning math or science, but
are having too much fun to recognize it as learning. These events
are a big hit with the children. These events require many volunteers.
SOCIAL EVENTS --
Volunteers
help coordinate these special events including entertainment, refreshments,
etc.
FAMILY/SON NIGHT
FAMILY/DAUGHTER

PARENT/TEACHER
RESOURCE CENTER (PTRC) -- Volunteers
work on projects (in the PTRC building located at Fishing Cove School
in North Kingstown) to create wonderful visual aids, instructional activities
and games for the classroom. This center is AWESOME!
There are literally hundreds of topics and themes for teachers to choose
from. This program is a labor of love and requires many volunteers!

IN
SCHOOL VOLUNTEERING -- ONGOING THROUGH THE YEAR:
Homeroom Mom program
-- At the beginning of the year, parents sign on to volunteer in their
child's class. Parents can volunteer to be the head home room mom
or a home room mom. If more than one parent volunteers for head home
room mom, a name is randomly drawn at the first PTG meeting of the school
year. Homeroom parent coordinators establish and maintain a network
of homeroom parents used for various classroom activities. The teacher
communicates their need for assistance through the head homeroom mom.
Participation of volunteers may include planning holiday celebrations,
reading during story hours, overseeing math stations, assisting computer
sessions, etc. The homeroom parent network is used to establish a
phone chain for use in alerting parents to upcoming events and to early
dismissal situations as they may develop. Volunteers may also be
requested to bake once a year for the bake sales.
In class volunteers
-- Parents sign on to volunteer, on an as needed basis, at the behest
of a teacher throughout the school year. The Volunteer coordinator
provides the telephone network to satisfy the requests of any teacher.
This type of volunteering (known this year as PaSST - Parents Supporting
Students and Teachers) is different from the homeroom mom program in that
parents provide tutorial support to children in classrooms other than their
own child's classroom.
Library program -- Volunteers
provide support to the school's librarian. The librarian provides
a list of tasks she would like completed and the coordinator provides the
resources.
Publishing center -- The
volunteers participate in the classroom to assist children in writing,
illustrating and publishing their own book, complete with either a pre-made
or originally designed cover. This program is labor intensive and
requires many volunteers!
Suitcase Museum Program
-- Volunteers move a portable "curriculum enrichment package" from
other schools in our district to our school and back. These thematically
designed suitcases provide curriculum enrichment and cover such areas as
weather, artists, or Australia to name just a few.
Lunch/Playground volunteers
-- Volunteers contribute 10 or 20 minutes to ensure safety on the playground
and assistance in the cafeteria.
**********************************************************************************
IN-SCHOOL
VOLUNTEERING -- ONE TIME EVENTS:
DENTAL
SCREENING -- Volunteers assist the
nurse once a year in providing dental screening for all children.
All grades are done at scheduled times over the course of one day or two
days. Many of the children are anxious about the screening and volunteers
help to reduce their level of anxiety.
PHYSICAL
EDUCATION ASSISTANCE -- Volunteers
assist the gym teacher in timed relay races, etc in a few programs
throughout the year. Each event is separate and requires separate
volunteers.
PRESIDENT'S PHYSICAL......
END OF THE YEAR FIELD DAY
ART ASSISTANCE
-- Volunteers help with the Art Appreciation
program by interviewing children and creating a portfolio for each child.
**********************************************************************************
