As the result of the increase in number of overweight children nationwide,
school districts who participate in the National School Lunch Program,
as we do, are required to institute wellness policies beginning this
school year. Goals that are addressed are nutrition education and
physical activity.
One of the practices that are being looked at in our school is birthday
and holiday celebrations. Traditionally cupcakes, cookies and other
sweets have been the mainstay. However, if we are serious about promoting
good health habits we need to look at alternatives that diminish the
association between food, especially sweets, and birthday and holiday
celebrations. Mrs. Rothberg suggests that instead of bringing in sweets
you could have your child bring in a special book to read to the class
that is birthday themed or of special interest to your child. Another
way of celebrating a child's birthday is to donate a book to the school
library. Inside each donated book there will be a book plate inscribed
with the child's name, along with a special message of your choosing.

We at Captain Isaac Paine School are very excited to welcome Mrs.
Pamela DelVecchio to our staff. Mrs. DelVecchio has 30 years experience
teaching foreign language and will be teaching French and Spanish
to the 4th and 5th grade students. Students will receive instruction
twice a week beginning with French until January and Spanish for the
remained of the school year.
Most experts agree that the earlier a child is introduced to a second
language, the greater the chances are that the child will become truly
proficient in the language. Also, children may derive other benefits
from early language instruction, including improved overall school
performance.

Because of safety concerns during morning drop-offs and afternoon
pick-ups a guardrail has been installed in front of the school. This
means that there is no longer any parking space on the side of the
road. Instead, parents and visitors are asked to park in the South
Lot by the kindergarten playground. This lot is now available exclusively
for your use. (Teachers and staff are now parking in the grassy area
by the bus lanes.)

By the time recess comes, students are ready
to run and play! We certainly encourage them to do that, since exercise
is so important to their health, but also because students will
be better able to go back to the classroom and learn. We are concerned
that many students are wearing shoes that make it unsafe to run
and play in, such as flip-flops and open-back sandals. The best
school-safe shoes are sneakers, but if other shoes or sandals are
work, please consider how safe they will be for your child to run
and play in.
