June 2010

From the Superintendent/Principal
It is hard to believe that we only have a few weeks of school left. Where did the time go? We are planning our kindergarten celebration to celebrate our kindergarten students' readiness to attend school all day long. Our kindergarteners are sad to be leaving their devoted teachers and, at the same time, excited about moving on to first grade. Now it is time to welcome next year's kindergarten students aboard.
Our fifth graders are also preparing for their departure to middle school. They are planning their traditional fifth grade bike hike. The fifth grade celebration will be a time to celebrate the closing of one door and the opening of another. Each student will cement a tile of their handprint to our walls that already proudly display the handprints of all of our former fifth graders. A part of each student will remain with us forever.
All of the teachers and staff at Captain Isaac Paine Elementary School are honored that our Foster parents have trusted us with their children this year. All of our students have worked hard, and they have made us proud to be their teachers. I wish you all a happy, healthy and safe summer vacation. We miss you already, and we look forward to welcoming your children back to school on September 1.

Mrs. Payette's Class News
If you haven't already heard, the students in Mrs. Payette's class have been going a bit "buggy". For the past several weeks, they have been searching for, observing, researching, experimenting with, and writing about a variety of bugs they found in our very own courtyard. They are working hard at writing reports, creating poetry, designing habitats, and building robots to accompany their work. This project has also required lots of enthusiasm, action, determination, and cooperation; especially when times get tough.
They are confident in their work and will be showing their poise, team spirit, and skill by inviting their parents to an afternoon in the courtyard on June 16th to share what they have learned. They will be sharing their research, reciting poems, exploring bug habitats, and demonstrating their robots. At 2:00 PM they will be participating in the Learning Celebration where they will be performing a short poem. This project is a culmination of all the skills they have learned in first grade, and boy have they learned and experienced a lot this year on their Journey to Success.

Miss Cosgrove's Class News
Miss Cosgrove's class has been studying the life cycle of the painted lady butterfly, watching it go through the stages of metamorphosis. The students have been raising their caterpillars since they were three days old. The caterpillars are now in the chrysalis stage. The first graders are anxiously awaiting the day that their beautiful butterfly will emerge from its chrysalis. The students will have a releasing ceremony when all the butterflies are ready.

Grade 4 News
The fourth graders are holding their annual Egg Drop Contest on Tuesday, June 8th at 2 PM. They need one LARGE uncooked egg, a well-constructed container, and a scientific mind. The key to avoiding the scrambles is good packaging. The students are challenged to be creative. The next step is to write an explanation of why they chose certain materials for packing their egg, and why they arranged them the way they did. The students will bring their packed egg to school on June 7th. Let's wish them luck in hatching their plan!

Inch and Miles
I am happy to share with you the June building block: Personal Best. We have reached the top of the pyramid. So far we have firmly placed the following blocks: hard work, enthusiasm, friendship, loyalty, cooperation, self-control, action, alertness, determination, fitness, skill, team spirit, poise, and confidence.
