It is wonderful to have your children back from winter break.
During the month of March we have many exciting learning experiences
planned for our students. I know you will all do your best
to have your children arrive at school on time so that they
do not miss a minute of our packed full days.
Thanks to our wonderful PTG, Save the Bay visited CIPS on
February 24th presenting a variety of topics to the 1st, 3rd,
and 4th grades. The 1st grade students were visited by Eelgrass
Man and some of his bay friends. They put on a puppet show
and taught the students about themselves and their unique
underwater habitat. They learned what happens when they are
faced with the dreaded "Brown Wave of Pollution!"
and what to do to prevent it. The 3rd grade played with water
while learning about its properties and its importance to
life in the Bay and on Earth, and how they can contribute
to their preservation. The 4th grade explored the fascinating
geological history of Rhode Island. The students learned about
the earth beneath their feet through studying sand samples,
rocks, and minerals and performing several activities. Each
of these programs brought a unique experience to the classroom.
All the children enjoyed the educational programs and learned
a lot about different aspects of Rhode Island and the Narragansett
Bay.
The American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days campaign was a
great success! Thanks to your generous donations we raised
over $500.00. The money raised will help fund cancer research,
educational programs, advocacy efforts, services for cancer
patients and their families, and the mission of the American
Cancer Society. The pictures of the bouquet of daffodils that
were colored in honor or memory of someone affected with cancer
have made a beautiful "Garden of Hope" and hang
in the windows of the courtyard. Thank you for joining the
fight for cancer and most importantly educating our students
about this disease. Your daffodil orders will be delivered
the week of March 22nd. Happy Spring!
Our AVEDA caps program has been a super success. Just last
week 8 paper boxes full of recyclable caps were shipped out
to AVEDA. Any threaded, rigid plastic caps marked with #5
are recyclable. Send in clean caps with your child or drop
them off in the receptacle in front of the office. Small steps
can make a BIG difference. Keep those caps coming!
March is "Music in Our Schools Month" all over the
United States. This annual national event promotes music education
and celebrates the musical accomplishments of students. Captain
Isaac Paine School students will present three performances
in March to recognize their achievements. These Celebrations
will take place on three consecutive Wednesday afternoons
beginning at 2:00 in the cafetorium; March 17: Kindergarten
and Grade 1, March 24: Grade 2 and 3 & March 31: Grades
4 and 5. The targeted audience will be the school population,
although there may be some room for parents who are free during
the day. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement
toward music education in the town of Foster!
Our next PTG meeting will be held March 10th at 7pm in the
school library. After cancelling our February meeting, we
have a lot to discuss and plan. All are welcome; we encourage
new ideas and thoughts and as always love to see faces. The
Parent Teacher Group wanted to let you know where your money
goes with all our fundraising efforts. To date the PTG has
spent $4020.00 for our students. We have funded the field
trips for kindergarten to go to Sunset Orchards, grade 1 to
go to Pezza Farm, Grade 5 has had a visit from the Snake Lady
and author L. Brennan, and we funded a teamwork & leadership
demonstration, Save the Bay, in school assembly, ice cream
reward for the entire school, playground stencils, paint,
sandblasting and mulch. We try as hard as we can to make the
experience for the children at Isaac Paine as enriching as
possible. Coming up for March we have Biomes Marine Center
setting up and maintaining an aquarium in the 2nd grade classrooms
for 4 weeks. We also have The Everett Dance Theatre coming
to perform "Breaking Down Science" for the entire
school. They will uncover the hidden world of science through
twists, spins, & flips of a break dancer with various
props. The PTG will be having Spirit Week March 15-19. During
Spirit Week we will be incorporating the Building Blocks learned
so far. Every time a student does a good deed or a "Building
Block" trait they receive a paw print. If the PTG collects
200 paw prints, we will reward the entire school with an ice
cream reward day! Girls Choice Events will be March 19th for
grade K-2 & March 26th for grades 3-5. More information
will follow. As always, thank you for all the continued support!
If you have any questions please call Shelley Pezza at 647-3295
or email me at shelley12@cox.net.
Over February vacation the PTG organized a Family-Fun-Day
with Miss S. Captain Isaac Paine flooded Town Hall Lanes with
over 100 bowlers. We had a wonderful time and are looking
forward to it again. Thank you Miss. S for coming to hang
out!
The Parent Teacher Group is organizing a Special Person Day
during the week of March 1st through March 5th. The deadline
was posted to be February 12th; however you can let Shelley
Pezza know at any time if you are going to be able to attend.
You may not be able to purchase a hot lunch, due to not enough
notice to give them a head count, but you can bring your own.
The dates & times vary for each grade. For more information
on this event please email shelley12@cox.net or call 647-3295.
The Parent Teacher Group has been holding a Cookie Dough &
Butter Braid Pastry fundraiser. We had the opportunity to
sample many different products, and this, by far, was our
favorite!! They are made with 100% real butter by a local
company in Connecticut. The fundraiser began on February 2,
2010 and the due date for orders was February 22nd. The delivery
of the goodies will be March 3, 2010. All the money raised
will go towards the purchase of a silicone based paint to
treat and cover the large playground at our school. In order
for the playground to remain open, this painting has to be
done to prevent splintering and further decay of the wood.
We appreciate all the continued support for all we do for
our children, the students and our school!! THANK YOU!!
The Parent Teacher Group will be sponsoring the Girls' Choice
Event on 2 dates this year. In order to cut down on the chaos
to make sure the girls and guest have as much fun as possible,
we divided the grades in half. The first event will be March
16th at 6:30-8:30 pm for grades K-2. There will be face painting,
crafts, dancing & games. March 26th from 6:30-9 pm will
be the second event for grades 3-5. There will be games, dancing,
karaoke and more. If you have any questions or would like
to help at either event, please call or email Shelley Pezza.
Students in the third grade have joined with Miss S. in a
letter writing campaign to her students at Rhode Island College
(RIC). Third graders have written persuasive letters as a
requirement of the writing curriculum. The students' work
is an attempt to persuade future teachers that integration
of academics with special area subjects, Phys Ed, Art and
Music, yields many benefits. The children experience this
integration through the collaborative efforts of their classroom
teachers and the specialists, so they know the advantages
first hand. The children's letters tell of greater interest
in learning, increased retention of information, ease of learning
and increased rate of learning, strengthening connections
with previous learning, making learning more enjoyable and
effective. The RIC students will respond by communicating
how well they were persuaded by the children's letters. Perhaps,
this experience will heighten our students' awareness of their
individual learning styles and may even inspire some to become
teachers themselves someday.
The 4th graders sponsored a fundraiser for the earthquake
relief in Haiti. On Friday, February 5th students wore crazy
hair or crazy hats to school. Our generous families and staff
donated $1,200. In a time of difficult financial times, our
community came through to help those less fortunate. Kudos!
Please share with your children the March building block:
Determination. I am attaching the March Inch and Miles Newsletter.
We are working our way to the top of the pyramid. So far,
we have firmly placed the following blocks: hard work, enthusiasm,
friendship, loyalty, cooperation, self-control, action and
alertness.
On March 4, we will be having an Irish program for the students
with "Celebrating Ireland." This is a program that
embraces Irish history and culture in story and song. For
more information, please check out their website: www.celticharpri.com/celebratingIreland.htm.
This program is sponsored by The Cultural Arts Committee.
If anyone is interested in being on this committee to help
bring more programs to the school, please contact Mrs. Murphy.
The March Family Library Night will be in celebration of "Read
Across America" and Dr. Seuss' birthday. The belated
birthday celebration will be combined with St. Patrick's Day.
The date will be announced soon. Look out for a notice sent
