The Art room is once again in full swing and your children are working
hard to create new and exciting works of Art. Some of you may have
already heard your child using words like "still- life",
or talking about things like "one point perspective".
Your child is learning a whole new vocabulary as well as making
Art. I have many new and exciting ideas to share with your child
this school year and also welcome any ideas that you may have that
would enrich their learning experiences. Please feel free to stop
by the Art room with your ideas or call me at home at 647-5260.
Listed below are some of the things we have been working on in the
Art room and some ideas I have that would reinforce the skills they
are learning. Thank you in advance for you time and I look forward
to meeting you.

Colors and cutting. We have been learning about colors and how to
mix certain colors to make new colors. We have also been talking
about warm and cool colors. Red, yellow and blue are the primary
colors and when mixed create the secondary colors.
R+Y=O, R+B=P, B+Y=G. Allowing your child to cut pictures, and coupons
out of magazines strengthens their fine motor skills and makes cutting
out shapes less frustrating for them.

We have been learning about still-life and the artist Paul Cezanne.
Fore, middle and background space was our focus. Shapes and the
world we live in is our next focus.
Collage, cutting and overlapping and the art of Henri Matisse was
our focus. We are now off to explore Mexico and the cultural celebration
"Day of the Dead". OOPS

forgot we are sending paper Butterflies to Mexico as part of the
Journey North's art and science curriculum collaboration.
Andrew Goldsworthy and Mother Nature was the inspiration for this
lesson and Literacy and art was the focus. We are in the process
of creating an alphabet book for the Kindergarten students. We used
some of Goldsworthy ideas and made all our letters out of materials
found in the woods behind Paine School. We then photographed the
letters for our book and stained every page with watercolors for
the background. We are now in the process of adding the text and
soon we will have our own handmade book to share with the school.

We are just finishing up a lesson on the Artist Georgia O'Keefe
and will soon begin a unit on clay. Our focus for this will be "Face
Jugs" and their origin.
The fifth graders and I just finished up a lesson that deals with
one- point perspective. This was a difficult lesson but one that
I feel was a most important one. They now have the ability to understand
how they as artists can create the illusion of space and depth in
their work. I would like to explore furniture as an art form next.
I am asking that each student bring in a chair (one that was on
its way to the trash). It could be a small child's chair (ideally)
and I would be willing to pick the chair up for them at home if
needed or you could bring the chair to the Art room at school. It
is my intent to have the students research an artist and/or period
and create a work of art using the chair as it reflects the artist
and their style.
