Ms. Ford's First Grade Class News
April 2007

Mathematics
We have just completed our unit titled "Quilt Squares and Block Towns." Students have taken home their test and this should be returned to school with a parent signature as soon as possible. We learned about 2 and 3 dimensional shapes. Students worked with pattern blocks and geoblocks for many of the tasks involved in this unit.

We are currently working on our next problem solving strategy, "Use or Look for a Pattern." This assessment will come home in the near future for your review and signature.

Science
We have just completed our study of penguins. Some of the skills incorporated into this unit included taking note facts and making an outline. We also produced webs in the computer lab using the program "Kidspirations." The children worked extremely hard on their webs. They are currently in our display case, but will be sent home in the near future.
Students learned many facts about the Emperor penguin. They became experts on this topic. Please ask your child to share some of their newly learned facts with you.
After April vacation, we will be beginning our next Science kit titled "New Plants." Students will be caring for plants to learn what they need to grow and develop. They will also be observing and describing changes that occur as plants grow and organizing their observations in their science journal. This will be another hands on, exciting learning experience!

Dinosaur Performance
Thank you so much for all of your donations for our future dinosaur performance! They are appreciated! If you have any recyclable materials, such as egg cartons, Styrofoam trays, or cardboard, please feel free to keep sending them in.

Book Envelopes
Just a reminder that students should be returning their book envelopes to school each day. If the book is lengthy, it can be kept for more than one night.

Thank you for your support,
Ms. Ford
