The ABCÕs of Math
Area
Area is the size a surface takes up measured in square units.
We find the area a rug covers on the floor.
Bar Graph
It uses bars to show how much of something. They can easily compare numbers.
Congruent
All sides and angels are the same and it is the same size.
Divisor
A number that will divide the dividend.  A divisor is an equation like four puppies divided by two.
Equilateral
Equilateral is a triangle with three equal sides and three equal angles. You would see one as a yield sign.
Factor
Factor a whole number that divides  exactly another number. If there are six cookies I will tell you the factors. 1and 2 are factors of 6 and so is 3.
Gallon
Standard unit of capacity for measuring liquids. We measure milk in gallons.
Hexagon
A polygon with six sides. The tiles show hexagons.
Isosceles Triangle
Join
It is to put or bring together so as to make continuous. All the states join together to make our country.
Kilometer
Standard metric unit for measuring distance.
You see this on the highway in United Kingdom instead of miles.
Line Segment
Mean
The mean is the average of a number of different amounts. The average in Rhode Island January the temperature is 29 degrees F.
Numerator
It is a number above the line of the fraction, showing the number of parts of the whole.
Sometimes I see a numerator when people are advertising the prices of the gas. Nine is the numerator in this sign.
Obtuse Angle
Any angle between 90 degrease and 180 degrease. Sometimes the hands on a clock are an obtuse angle.
Perimeter
Distance around the outside of a shape.
A fence can go around the edge of a field.
Quadrilateral
It is a polygon with four sides.  You would see it at the supermarket.  (A box of Junior Mints)
Rhombus
Rhombus is a parallelogram with four equal sides and equal opposite angles.  A baseball infield is a rhombus because it has four equal sides.
Similar Figures
Two shapes are similar if they have the same shape but different sizes.
These coffee cups are the same shape but a different size so they are similar.
  Turn
To turn is to rotate around a point. A wheel on a car turns when you drive it.
Vertex
Point where surfaces meet (corner).
Like on the corners of a stop sign.
Whole Number
A counting number from 0 to infinity.  We use whole to count.
"X-Axis"
Year
The time it takes the earth to
completely orbit the sun, equal to 12 months, 52 weeks or 365 days. We can use a calendar to measure a year.
