We are glad that you could visit our Web site. We have outlined some information for you to help make this year a happy and successful year for everyone.
If you are planning to pick-up your child after school, please send a note to your child's teacher. If you do not send a note and you are not here at dismissal time, school policy requires that we send your child home on the bus. If you make arrangements to have another adult pick-up your child, please notify your child's teacher in writing on that day. For safety reasons, we are not allowed to let children go with adults other than their parents or guardians unless we have written notification.
Reading, writing and speaking skills will be integrated with social studies, science and seasonal themes throughout the year. Topics are chosen from one curriculum area and are brought into all areas of instruction.
Children will bring home a book in a plastic bag along with a log of all the books they've brought home. Your child should read the story, and the listener should record a response. These responses should praise the children's efforts and encourage them to want to read more!
Children in the first grade will be writing on a daily basis. Students are encouraged to use phonetic spellings (recording letters they hear) in their writing. Improvements in the mechanics of writing such as conventional spelling, punctuation and capitalization) will come with experience and practice.
We usually begin our weekly spelling lists and tests after the first quarter. Children will bring home a list of words on Monday and will be tested on Friday.
The first grade math program emphasizes the use of manipulatives in developing math concepts. Our program is designed to develop problem solving skills as well as mathematical concepts and mathematical reasoning. Children will be writing a math journal to enhance their knowledge of the mathematically process.
Our school policy states that first graders should have about 15 minutes of homework, two evening per week. Please encourage your child to be responsible about homework.
If you have any questions, at any time, please call the school and leave a message and we will return your call as soon as possible.
