We're glad that you could visit our Web page. Listed below are a few items to help you better understand your child's second grade program.
Reading instruction takes place with a Whole Class/Flexible Grouping Model. The Silver Burdett Basal Series is used as well as many trade books which expose students to appropriate levels of literature. Independent reading is encouraged daily and monitored by the use of Student Reading Logs.
The five step mode of writing is used in the classroon:
1. Prewriting
2. Drafting
3. Revising
4. Editing
5. Publishing
Students will receive a spelling list at the beginning of each week. They are strongly encouraged to study their spelling list at home during the week. They will be tested on their list on Friday.
Second graders are assigned approimately 15 to 20 minutes of homework, Monday - Thursday nights. The experience of doing and returning homework is intended to teach children a sense of responsiblity and pride in accomplishing a task on his/her own. Parents may provide some guidance and perhaps clarify directions, but should allow the children the chance to do actual assignments as independently as possible.
School book clubs provide an inexpensive way for students to choose their own books for independent reading. There is one order per month and participation is voluntary. Payment may be made by check and made payable to the particular book club.
