We're glad that you could visit our Web page. Listed below are a few items to help you better understand your child's fourth grade program.
Reading instructions takes place with a Whole Group/Flexible Grouping Model. We will be using the Silver Burdett Basal Series as well as many trade books. Independent Reading is encouraged daily and monitored by the use of Reading Logs.
This five-step model of writing is used in the classroom:
1. Prewriting
2. Drafting
3. Revising
4. Editing
5. Publishing
All children's published works will be kept in school until June and then sent home during the final week of school. Each child is required to publish at least one piece of writing each month.
These subjects are taught as units. Science units covered in fourth grade include Space, Oceans and Volcanoes. In Social Studies, the children will learn about the continents, oceans, land forms and resources of the fifty states. Children will be notified at least two days in advance of any tests.
Fourth graders are assigned 30 - 45 minutes of homework Monday through Thursday nights. Homework assignments are to be turned in the following day. If not, they are considered late assignments. Homework assignments may include written work, studying for tests, reports and/or projects, or independent reading.
If your child is absent, your child must make up any missed assignments.
School book clubs provide an inexpensive way for students to choose their own books. There is one order per month and participation is voluntary. If you choose to pay by check, please make it out to the book club you are ordering from.
