Welcome to Fifth Grade!

We're glad that you could visit our Web page. Listed below are a few items to help you better understand your child's fifth grade program.

Reading

Reading instruction takes place with a Whole Class/Flexible Grouping Model. The Silver Burdett Basal Series is used as well as many trade books which expose student to appropriate levels of literature. Independent reading is encouraged daily and monitored by the use of Student Reading Logs.

Process Writing

The five step mode of writing is used in the classroom:

1. Prewriting
2. Drafting
3. Revising
4. Editing
5. Publishing

Most of the children's published works and rough drafts will be kept in school and will be sent home on a quarterly basis. Each child is required to publish at least one piece of writing each month.

Spelling

Students will receive a spelling list at the beginning of each week. They are strongly encouraged to bring home their spelling list to study over the week. They will be tested on their list on Friday.

Homework

Fifth graders are assigned approximately forty-five minutes of homework, Monday - Thursday nights. The experience of doing and returning homework is intended to teach your child a sense of responsibility and pride in accomplishing a task on his/her own. Parents may provide some guidance and perhaps clarify directions, but should allow the child the chance to do actual assignments, which might include written work, studying for tests, writing reports, working on projects or independent reading.

Book Orders

School book clubs provide an inexpensive way for students to choose their own books for independent reading. There is one order per month and participation is voluntary. Payment may be made by check and made payable to the particular book club.
