The ECC prides itself on fostering an education rich in an integrated curriculum of Balanced Literacy.  The teachers use a variety of leveled materials in their daily instruction.  The students receive instruction in whole group, small groups, as well as ad hoc flexible grouping that engage them in interactive reading and writing.  These strategies are assessed through portfolios, observational surveys, and running records.

The children are taught strategies on how to problem solve a difficult word by relating it to a similar known word , making connections, looking for word chunks and looking at the picture.  Phonemic awareness is taught through word walls and interactive writing. Writing is integrated across the curriculum.

Some of the goals of the School Improvement Team is to achieve high standards for all students, to incorporate best practices in reading and writing and to increase parent involvement.
The PTO has been very helpful with fundraisers for the school, such as Holiday Pies, book fair, school pictures, and Spring raffle.
We are in the process of applying for accreditation through the Keys to Quality Project by the National Accreditation for the Education of Young Children.
