What
is Occupational Therapy?
School-based
occupational therapy is designed to enhance the student's ability to fully
access and be successful in the
learning environment.
This might include working on handwriting or fine motor skills so the child
can complete written assignments, helping the
child organize himself or herself in the environment (including work space
in and around the desk), working with the
teacher to modify the classroom and/or adapt learning materials to facilitate
successful participation.
What
is Sensory Integration?
Our
brains must be able to organize and process sensory input, and use that
input to respond appropriately to a particular situation. To do so,
we must integrate information we receive through all our senses and from
movement and gravity.
Many
children don't know how to cope with the different sensory input they receive.
They have difficulty organizing information and performing the many complex
tasks necessary for learning and functioning in the world.
What
is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism
spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of life-long developmental disabilities
caused
by an
abnormality of the brain. ASD are characterized by problems with social
interaction
and
communication skills, and by the need for sameness or repetition in behavior.
ASD
includes
autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder - not otherwise specified
(also
known
as atypical autism), and Aspergerís disorder.
What is ADD/ADHD?
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder is defined as a specific developmental disorder of both children and adults that is comprised of deficits in sustained attention, impulse control, and the ability to regulate activity level fit situational demands.
