Lucille's Photo Album
On my journey to different
parts of the United States, I have learned about what kinds of plants and
animals live in different habitats. Here, in my photo album you will see
pictures of these living things.
Minnesota
In Minnesota there are lots of marshes. A marsh
is a kind of wetland. It has lots of trees and grasses. Even though
the temperatures can get well below zero, a marsh doesn't freeze.
There are lots of plants and animals that
make their home in a marsh. One animal is the loon. It is the Minnesota
state bird and is protected by the state. The loon has long legs.
In mating season the call of the male loon is often mistaken for the cry
of the wolf. The female loon can dive under water for over ten minutes.
The loon mates for life. Scientists believe that the bird's eyes
are red becasue it helps them see better underwater.
The plant we chose is the cattail. It
is found at the water's edge. If you push on one really hard they puff.
They hold water in their stems. They are a perennial reed. The leaves
can be used for weaving mats and baskets.
There are many habitats in Minnesota.
We chose the marsh because we have one located right next to our school.
Remsen, New York
In the woods around Remsen there are deer and turkeys. The turkeys
roost in the trees at night. In the daytime they eat nuts, seeds
and insects in the fields. They gather in small flocks in the
woods and fields of Remsen. They eat grass, twigs, bark, leaves and
small branches. A flock of turkeys live on the nature trail behind
or school
and walk across the playground all the time!
