Narragansett Elementary School

School Improvement Plan - Revised September 14, 2000

Mission: Narragansett celebrates diversity and challenges students to become self-directed learners as we promote and foster creative and critical thinking within the school community. We are devoted to providing a safe, nurturing environment, which encourages all to care, share, and show compassion and be respectful. Our school, in partnership with parents and community, expects all students to develop and acquire skills, knowledge, and values that they will share with each other and the global community.

Objectives for Our Students:

1. By June 2003, the percentage of 4th graders meeting or exceeding the standards in Mathematics will increase to the following amounts:

ß 38 - 50% in math problem-solving (18)
ß 39 - 50% in math concepts (16)
ß 74 - 80% in math skills (8)

(with the exception that all students will demonstrate continuous improvement towards attainment of these standards.)

2. By June 2003, all students will show improvement in writing skills using grade level performance assessment.

3. Through June 2003, all students will continue to demonstrate improvement toward proficiency in reading at grade 4 as demonstrated by the New Standards Performance Assessment.

4. All students will participate in a service project each year, which will demonstrate caring, compassion, and respect.

Strategies - What adults will do to insure that students achieve the objectives.

1. Create a partnership with families and the community and provide opportunities for parents to enhance their skills in supporting the achievement of their children in the areas of health, physical education, art, music, technology, social, emotional, and academic growth and continue/connect the learning begun at school.

2. Explore ways to provide enrichment opportunities to all students.

3. Revise and update our curriculum to integrate technology and to align with the standards and provide continuity with and across grade levels and establish benchmarks and rubrics in all areas.

4. Provide teachers with the opportunity to develop and share alternative instructional strategies, including the use of technology, to meet the needs of and to challenge all learners.

5. Maximize opportunities for learning by taking steps to implement the following programs:

ß Reduction in class size K - 4 beginning with K
ß Restructuring of physical space
ß All-Day Kindergarten

6. Promote awareness of respect for each other and all aspects of diversity
in our learning community.

7. Create smaller more personalized learning communities within our school in order to enhance communication, learning, and safety.

8. Create opportunities for teachers to collaboratively examine student work in relationship to the standards and curriculum.
