OSMOSIS
Osmosis:
diffusion of water molecules
through a selectively permeable membrane from an area of higher water concentration
to an area of lower water concentration.
INTRODUCTION:
Osmosis is a type of diffusion, it essentially is
the diffusion of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane.
As the diagram below illustrates if you put a selectively permeable membrane
between concentrated and not so concentrated sugar water the water will
diffuse through the membrane to even out the mixtures.
THE IMPORTANCE OF OSMOSIS: Every
living thing on earth requires osmosis to survive. Water has to be able
to travel in and out of cells and other membranes in order for a body to
function.
