EMSTEMSTE
-
Cortex - The
root tissue that transports water and nutrients inward through the root.
It also may store sugar and starches.
-
Epidermis
- In plants, the thin layer of root tissue
that takes in water and nutrients.
-
Phloem
- vascular tissue responsible for the transport
of nutrients and the products of photosynthesis throughout the plant
-
Cambium
- produces additional xylem and phloem.
This layer adds new cells that increse the width of the stem
-
Xylem
- vascular tissue that provides support to
a plant and conducts water from the roots to all parts of the plant
-
Pith -
(Parenchyma)- In monocot stems, parenchyma isdistributed throughout the
stemand is often used for storage. In dicot stems, a core pith is
laid down in the center of the stem, where it is surrounded by layers of
xylem.
