321 Level 2                                                             Full Year
This course emphasizes the reinforcement of writing skills learned in grade 9.  Further refinement and application of these skills is fostered by a more intensive study and use of higher level (i.e., abstract) thinking skills.  A cogent, unified, coherent 5 paragraph essay is a course objective.  Language study includes combining mechanics, usage, and syntax as tools to achieve sentence variety and a personal writing style.  The literary genre explored in depth is the novel.  Students continue their study of Shakespeare and other authors of note such as Dickens, Steinbeck, or Hemingway.  Again, the elements of fiction are emphasized in literary analysis.  Other areas studied include speaking and active listening, vocabulary development, critical review of media and expansion of research and study skills.
