HOMEWORK POLICY

We at Birchwood School believe that homework is an integral part of our system of learning, and that all students are capable of being successful.  We are fully aware this success rests on the cooperation of student, home and school.

Homework is either preparation or reinforcement of a lesson.  To that end, homework is used in class on its due day as part of the lesson.  Therefore, with the exception of absence, homework is either completed on time, or does not receive credit.

ABSENCE

Short term – 1or 2 days                                    Homework is due the day after child returns to school.

Long term – over 2 days                                   Make up will be at the discretion of the teacher, but will be within a reasonable time.

Absence (not due to family vacation)

on the day a project is due                                Project is DUE THE DAY THE CHILD RETURNS TO SCHOOL.

Missed tests and quizzes                                   All tests and quizzes need to be made up within one week of student’s return to school.

Please note that vacations when school is in session are not encouraged.   On

the occasions when this is unavoidable, please note class work must

be requested at least one week in advance.   The work will be given ON

THE LAST DAY THE STUDENT IS IN SCHOOL before the vacation.

This work is due THE DAY the student returns to school.  Any PROJECTS assigned that

are due during the vacation are DUE BEFORE THE CHILD LEAVES.

OTHER NOTES

It is the student’s responsibility to collect missing assignments.

All students must at least attempt to complete homework; if there is no attempt, it counts as

not doing homework.  “I didn’t understand” is NOT an excuse for not

attempting homework.

Children are not allowed to call home for a homework assignment or project.

Homework needs to arrive in class WITH the student.   Homework left in lockers is not acceptable.

Parent notes explaining why homework is not done are helpful to us, but will not excuse the child from the assignment.

I have read and understand this homework policy.
