    Our Beliefs

    Our guiding beliefs direct the activities designed to accomplish our vision. They represent the fundamental values of the school district in attaining its desired future. The beliefs that guide the Portsmouth School District are as follows.

WE BELIEVE THAT:

All students can learn;
Learning is a continuous, life long process;
Everyone must be treated with respect;
Schools are safe, secure, and nurturing learning environments;
Connecting learning to the real world will improve student interest, performance and class participation;
Foreign languages and the arts are an integral component of the curriculum;
Education is the shared responsibility of students, parents, school staff, and the entire community;
Schools prepare students to succeed in an increasingly complex, technological, and rapidly changing economy;
Schools provide a wide variety of extra-curricular experiences;
High expectations and academic standards are the cornerstone of success;
Schools prepare students to be creative thinkers, problem solvers, and effective communicators;
Schools prepare and challenge students to be community contributors and productive citizens;
All students, staff and community members have unique talents and abilities that are to be acknowledged, respected, encouraged, developed, and utilized;
Appropriate resources and funding are necessary to support and maintain learning within schools and beyond;
The physical environment is an essential component of the learning process;
An effective school provides for recognizing and rewarding superior staff performance;
All participants in the educational process are accountable for stated goals and objectives;
Assessment of student performance is measured against established standards;
Learning is a process that requires individual and cooperative effort; AND,
It is important that community members are encouraged and invited to participate in the education process.
