The Portsmouth School Department has an enrollment of approximately 2,765 students and uses six school buildings as listed below:

The per pupil expenditure for 1996-1997 was $7,614. The total operating budget for the 1998-99 school year is $21,585,182. In addition, federal and state grants provide additional funds to operate a number of educational programs, including but not limited to, Special Education, Gifted and Talented Education, Compensatory Education, Vocational Education Computer Programming and Staff Development.
