GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Twenty-two (22) credits are required for graduation of all students. By State Law, students must have Physical Education/Health in their program each year. Students who have physical disabilities will be offered a special program to meet their needs. All students should develop a personal program to meet their future goals. The graduation requirements are considered to be minimum requirements and do not necessarily indicate a total well-rounded program for all students, but rather a minimum educational base upon which future goals may be developed.

Graduation Course Requirements

To a total of 22 credits. A 39 period program, including Physical Education/Health, is the minimum class schedule. Students are encouraged to take a 42 period program of studies.

English 4 credits
Social Studies (including World Cultures/Geography,

US Government, US History/Geography)

3 credits
Mathematics 3 credits
Science 3 credits
Physical Education/Health 2 credits
Computer 1 or Mastering the Computer 1/2 credits
*Fine/Practical Arts 2 credits
Electives To a total of 22 credits

* Fine/Practical Arts credits may be earned from the following areas: Art, Family & Consumer Science, Technology Education, World Languages, Music and/or Theater Arts. A MINIMUM OF 1/2 CREDIT MUST BE TAKEN FROM EITHER ART, MUSIC, OR THEATER ARTS.

All students during their senior year at Portsmouth High School are required to take a minimum of 3 1/2 credits from the course selection areas of English, Math, Social Studies, Science, Computer and World Languages.

Recommended Diploma Program

In addition to the graduation course requirements, students may select a course of study which leads to a certificate of specialization/competency. It is recommended that students consider the selection of one or more of the following options:
