GUIDANCE PROGRAM The Elementary Guidance Program of the Portsmouth School Department provides support for each student in order to encourage the development of a wholesome view of self and others. This includes the social and emotional, as well as academic growth of the students in kindergarten through grade four. The goal is to help students progress to the best of their ability and to become productive members of society. The guidance personnel work in close cooperation with the total school staff and the parents to achieve this goal for all students.
The Guidance Counselor's role at the Middle School is to assist students in the student's development both academically and socially. The counselor is always on hand to aid teachers, parents and students in seeking solutions to problems involving middle school age students. Students, parents and teachers are encouraged to seek the counselor's assistance in the problems encountered by the student population at the Middle School.
Guidance Counselors at the High School are available to assist the students in assessing their strengths and limitations; make suitable decisions; develop positive attitudes; choose appropriate courses; solve problems with friends, family and teachers; discuss the student's talents and abilities; job placement, education planning and career choices.
