Portsmouth Schools  Our mission is to create a comprehensive teaching and learning environment which provides opportunities for all students to become, to their fullest potential, responsible citizens, self-directed individuals, and life-long learners.

A few words from the Superintendent

On behalf of the Portsmouth School Committee, our teachers and staff, I wish to extend my best wishes and greetings at the beginning of the 1999-2000 school year. This has been an extremely busy summer in the following areas as we have prepared for the opening of school:

Staff Selection Selection committees consisting of administrators, teachers, parents and community members have participated in the selection of twenty-two teachers and two administrators. Although we will miss the contributions of our retiring teachers, we are thrilled with the quality, experience and enthusiasm of the new members of our educational community.

Construction The first phase of the recently passed $9.2 million bond issue is the addition of four new and two refurbished classrooms at Elmhurst School and a new entrance to improve security at the Middle School. Plans are being finalized for a major classroom addition and athletic complex at Portsmouth High. Construction will begin approximately October 1 with additional work on the science classrooms completed next summer. Plans for renovating the Hathaway primary wing will begin shortly after school begins. Work will occur at Hathaway next summer along with improvements at both Melville and the Prudence Island School.

In addition to the items covered in the bond, other maintenance jobs this summer included the separation of the gym and cafeteria at Elmhurst and paving at Melville. Plans are underway to begin the renovation of the high School auditorium.

Technology and Communication Systems New computer management systems have been installed at the High School and Middle School with the elementary schools soon to follow. New phone lines have been added to all schools. We are experiencing some of the normal difficulties of breaking in new systems, but expect to have everything functioning smoothly by the first day of school.

Portsmouth Schools have a well-deserved reputation of excellence. The success of our efforts lies in a strong, enduring partnership between parents and teachers to promote the positive social and academic growth of our students. This effort requires the support of our entire community as well. Our administrators, teachers, custodians, clerks, and our food service and transportation service providers all work in concert to provide our best effort for our students.
