ATHLETICS BIMONTHLY

Jan/Feb

Sept/Oct

Nov/Dec

The winter sports season has been a very busy one. Ice hockey won their first game on December 21st. As of this date that is their only win. However, many games have been very competitive, and the attitude of the team has been extremely positive. Many faculty members and students have supported the team, and everything that we have heard about the games have been positive.

The middle school basketball teams completed their seasons on February 4th. The boys struggled this season; however, there was both individual and team growth and development throughout the season. The girls had a winning season, but only the top two teams make the play-offs. This issue needs to be addressed by the league. This was one of the most successful seasons in some time for the girls’ middle school basketball team.

The boys’ varsity basketball team is currently in fourth place and definitely in the play-off hunt. The JV team has had a tough season, but the varsity has been very competitive and is looking to finish strong. The girls’ varsity basketball team has improved greatly from last season. The team is in third place and fighting to make the play-offs. The JV team has been very successful this season, placing 2nd in the Sojourner House Snowball Classic.

Jean Angell attended the National Federation High School Field Hockey Rules Committee meeting in Indianapolis the first weekend in February. It is a great honor to serve on this national board. Jean also attended a mandatory Athletic Directors’ meeting to go over the new scheduling process that the Interscholastic League will be implementing. The use of the Internet will be the main vehicle of communication with the league and other schools in the near future. The job of the athletic director continues to change and become more time consuming.

Mandatory coaches’ meetings run by the Interscholastic League for spring sports have started. We are still in search for head and assistant girls’ volleyball coaches. We may be looking for a middle school baseball coach. The spring season begins March 4th for the Middle School and March 10th for the high school. Pray for sun, as we need to have our outside fields ready for play in early March.

Respectfully Submitted,

Jean Angell

Nov/Dec

Health classes have been following their respective curriculums for the months of November and December. The senior classes are beginning to cover the American Red Cross First Aid and CPR course. Those students who fulfill all of the requirements will be certified in First Aid and CPR.

The weather cooperated for us as far as the physical education classes were concerned. We were able to go outside far into November. The classes have started their winter rotation with basketball, floor hockey, and indoor lacrosse. Indoor lacrosse is a new addition to our course offerings, and the students have enjoyed the sport.

Indoor facilities have become an issue as there are four classes being conducted when one of the 6th grade teams meet. There are four teachers, but only three teaching areas, so the two 6th grade teachers are splitting half of a gym, which results in 25-28 students in a quarter of a gym. Class size has also become an issue in the 8th grade. We are currently trying to find a solution to this problem.

Kevin Ryan and Jean Angell have had student teachers from RIC. The student teachers have had to deal with the problems of large classes and small teaching areas. It has created a challenge for them.

The physical education department received computers and printers in the locker rooms. This has been a great addition to the department; research work for health classes and physical education can be conducted on the computer. The locker system has been computerized, and we look forward to computerizing the physical fitness scores.

The 2001-2002 athletic season began on August 20th. Soccer, tennis and volleyball were in full swing and playing games before school opened. Andrea Dorr is our girls’ tennis coach and Lynn Ricci is our fall cheerleading advisor. Jason Snow, a 2001 graduate, has returned to be the boys’ volleyball assistant coach. Tim Brown, a former Scituate student-athlete, is the boys’ soccer assistant coach. Abbie Groves, another former Scituate student-athlete, is the girls’ middle school soccer coach. It is great to have these former student-athletes return to coach.

The girls’ tennis season has concluded. The team did not make the play-offs. However, they did finish the season with a victory over East Providence. This was a very young and inexperienced team, and they showed great growth over the season.

The boys’ volleyball team has struggled this year. The boys are working hard and having fun. They have shown growth throughout the season and lost some tough five-game matches.

The cross-country teams continue to grow in number, and many individuals are setting new personal bests in each meet. Our one home meet went well. It is amazing how many people work at these meets to make them successful.

The soccer teams have had a good year and are fighting for play-off spots. The girls’ team had a tough beginning after losing seven players to graduation and with injuries to several key players. Once these players returned, the team has gone on to a very successful record. The girls will be in the play-offs, and Coach Parmenter recorded his 100th win at the Homecoming game. The boys’ team has had a good year, and they are fighting to keep their play-off spot. Coach Gilchrist also recorded his 100th win recently.

Homecoming was held on October 27th. The Pep Rally was very successful and the cheerleaders and Student Council did an outstanding job. The Homecoming Parade and crowning of the queen went well. The boys and the girls won their games. Overall, the day was a real success.

Thomas D. and Kaila McC. have been named State Finalists in the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award Program. This is a great honor for these two student-athletes. Congratulations Tom and Kaila.

David Light and Jean Angell continue to serve on the RI Interscholastic League Principals’ Committee. Jean is the field hockey director and David is co-chair of the basketball committee. David and Jean attended the mandatory Principal-Athletic Director meeting sponsored by the RIIL on October 18th. Jean then attended the Coaches’ Education Planning Committee meeting. Jean is also a member of the AD Executive Committee.

The fall season is winding down and preparations for the winter season are beginning. The ice hockey team has been doing a great deal of fund raising to sponsor their team this year. The first Scituate ice hockey game will be on December 1st.

We are currently searching for a middle school boys’ basketball coach and a high school cheerleading advisor. Middle school sports begin November 12th and high school sports begin November 20th.

To be eligible to participate in athletics and extra-curricular activities at Scituate High School, students are expected to maintain appropriate behavior, citizenship, and acceptable academic standards.
