Introduction
For centuries, animals have played an important role in people's lives.  This has been especially true in the lives of Ancient Egyptians. Through this webquest you will discover why Egyptians held the animals that inhabited their land in such a high esteem.
Task
Your team must gain knowledge about 8 animals that lived during ancient Egyptian times and how the Egyptian culture was influenced by these animals. Your team will consists of 4 members.
Professor of History
A writer, student, or scholar of past events.
Biologist
This scientist studies living organisms.
Anthropologist
This scientist studies the origin and behavior of people.  The anthropologist may study the physical, social, and cultural development of human beings.
Egyptologist
This scientist studies the artifacts of the ancient Egyptian civilization.
 

 

Your team members will visit several web pages and in doing so be able complete several tasks and answer the questions below.

1. In what way do you think this animal affected the life of the Ancient Egyptians?
2. What characteristics of this animal did the Egyptians recognize as important?  Why?
3. Is this characteristics admired or feared?  Why?
4. To which kingdom, phylum and class does this animal belong? Is this animal an invertebrate or vertebrate?
5. In what type of environment would this animal have lived?
6. Does this animal still exist in Egypt today?  Explain your answer.

Upon the completion of your research, your team will create a virtual museum exhibiting your mastery of the information you have gathered.
Process/Resources
1. Your team must pick 8 animals from the following list.  No one animal can be picked by two groups.
2. Divide the 8 animals among your group members.
3. Print out your questionnaire for your animal.
3.  Each group member will visit the following sites to answer the above questions.  Use your team's disk to save any pics.

4.  Use your questionnaire to write a 3 paragraph summary of your animal.  Your 2 paragraphs must consist of the following.

Paragraph 1:
Introduce your animal, discuss what characteristics of the animal were important, and explain how the animal played a role in the Ancient Egyptian culture.

Paragraph 2:
Discuss to which phylum and class the animal belongs.  Is it an invertebrate or vertebrate?  Discuss which environment the animal would have lived. You can explain the reasons why the animal may not be still living in Egypt today.

Paragraph 3:
Discuss any other interesting facts about your animal.

5. While your team members are searching the web, other team members need to create a hand drawn map of Ancient Egypt using resources within the room.

6. Use Netscape Composer and the roles below to create your a web site for our virtual museum.

Conclusion
After completing this webquest, you will know a little more about animals.  You will know in detail the role that animals have played in the culture of Ancient Egyptians and how the Ancient Egyptian's perception of their animal affect how they lived their everyday lives.
