Project Description (return to top)
Australia: Golden Opportunity
Olympic ExplorationThis project is an investigation into the 2000 Olympics in Sydney Australia. Because it is a "timely event", you are being asked to use real time data both at home and at school. Information should be collected from a variety of sources including, but not limited to books, newspapers, magazines, Internet, and interviews. The project is assigned as an individual project. You will use some class time, but many parts of the project must be done at home. Grading will be based on the criteria given and your effort in meeting these criteria. Assignments turned in on time will receive full credit. Late projects will lose points accordingly.
~ Choose an Olympic Event that will occur in Sydney 2000. Find an athlete that will participate in that event. This athlete should not represent Australia or the United States, but may be from anywhere else in the world.
~ Keep a daily, dated log of your research. This will include dates, what you have done, problems, and a plan for information you will need to find the next day.
~ The following data should be collected about your athlete and/or their country:
Capitol city of the athlete's country
Absolute location (latitude and longitude) of
that capitol city
Sydney~ Absolute location of Providence
~ * Average monthly precipitation for Jan, April, July, and October for:
that capitol city
Sydney
Providence~ * Average monthly temperature for Jan, April, July, and October for:
that capitol city
Sydney
Providence* This information will be used to create a climagraph in class.
~ Create a logo for that athlete to wear on her/his jacket during the Olympics. Use what you have learned about the athlete's country, event, and interests to create this logo.
~ Plot a path from your athlete's country to Sydney on a world map. Estimate the distance (in a straight line) from that capitol city to Sydney. Include basic map elements.
~ Collect Olympic data for 3 past summer Olympics. Complete the data chart given in class with this information. Make a line graph of the data that you have collected.
