Welcome to our web site, Walls and Bridges of the World. This web site features the historic Berlin Wall of Germany. The Berlin Wall is a monument that represents the past conflicts of East Germany and West Germany. It also shows how determined the people of East Germany were to end the problems. Slowly, East and West worked out their problems and merged together again. Today, you can still visit some parts of the wall. We hope you find the information you need in this site.

What is a wall?
A wall can be invisible or visible. The visible walls are sometimes barriers, to separate unfriendly countries or keep people in. Walls can also be hated. The Berlin Wall was built to keep people in a country they didn't like. Invisible walls are usually conflicts that take place. They can also be conflicts in nature. Sometimes, something can happen, and can mess up animals and their habitats or behavior.

What is a bridge?
Bridges are usually invisible. They are solutions to conflicts, or processes used to solve something that has happened.

The Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was a large wall that surrounded West Berlin. It was built in 1961, and maintained by the former German Democratic Republic. It was known as East Germany until 1989. The Berlin wall was a visible symbol of the Cold War. At the end of World War 2, the city of Berlin was completely surrounded by territory occupied by the Soviet Union. West Berlin was divided between the US, UK, France, and Russia. It was supported by the Federal republic of Germany, commonly known as West Germany. Between 1949 when East Germany was established and the middle of 1961 at least 2.7 people fled to East Germany. More than half of them through west Berlin. During the night of August 13, 1961, East Germany soldiers and members of its militia surrounded West Berlin with temporary fortifications that were rapidly replaced by a concrete wall that was 12 feet high and 103 miles long and 28 miles lays between 2 sides of the city where a wall wasn't possible, buildings were bricked up. The only openings were 2 closely guarded crossing points. The government  built tank traps and ditches to keep German citizens in.
Berlin is the capital of Germany, and the largest city in the country. Between 1961 and 1989, a few East Germans managed to escape to West Berlin. Unfortunately, about 80 people died trying to cross the border. In the summer of 1989, the Berlin Wall became irrelevant. The country of Hungary allowed East Germans to pass through Hungary on their way to Austria and West Germany.
