Stop World Hunger!

Did you know that hunger kills 34,000 children every day? Did you also know that one in twelve people worldwide is malnourished, including 160 million people under the age of five? Not many people do, but the project that I am doing for school is to warn people and to tell them about all of the causes of hunger.

This project, assigned by the eighth grade English teachers at Gallagher Middle School in Smithfield, Rhode Island is to help us, the students, become aware of hunger around the world. Also, March is "March for Hunger" month, in which our school has some fundraisers and dances to help other students become aware of world hunger.

Below is the main part of my project. What we had to do was to separate and categorize articles and facts into three groups. These three groups are political, economical, and environmental causes of hunger.

One person I know that devotes a lot of what he does to the hungry people is Alan Sean Feinstein. His goal is to make Rhode Island the first hunger free state. I hope that he can achieve his goal. You can visit his web-site by clicking on the link below.

Political causes

Some of the political causes can be caused by violence and war and some countries in the middle east. Lack of food can be used as a weapon of war. Also, land crops that are destroyed during battle might take a long time to rebuild.

Environmental causes

Floods, hurricanes, tornadoes etc. can cause some disaster to crops. Destruction of forests and pollution are a couple of reasons crops are ruined and emergency supplies are needed.

Economic causes

Some low income jobs or a country with a low economy can result in poverty. When economy is bad, the country suffers, but the people that suffer most are poor people.

Miscellaneous Facts

Here are some facts I found that didn't fit into any of the other categories on this project, but I found them very interesting anyway.
