Political Causes of Hunger
Some of the reasons that people go hungry is due to political issues between countries. Such things can be wars and violence.
In 1993, U.S. Citizens spent about the same amount on cruise ships and theme parks as the Federal Government spent on AFDC. The problem, in fact, is not a lack of money, but a series of decisions on how money gets spent. Enough money is available to end worse case poverty in a few years and enough food to provide everyone in the world with a minimally nutritious diet right now.
The latest figures from the US department of Agriculture reports that the number of food recipients across the nation has declined dramatically in the past few years. Rhode Island has mirrored this trend. Paradoxically, during this same time period the number of people seeking help at a local food pantry has gone up, so much of that the Rhode Island Community Food Bank has nearly doubled its distribution of food to meal sites and food pantries since 1995.
World War I caused the great depression in our country, which made a lot of people poor and even more people hungry.
